Bringing in competition for him,is the best thing in the world for him. i think they are doing the right by making him earn the starting job instead of handing it to him.
Doesn't hurt to learn from a veteran...it's a dog-eat-dog world out there and it's nice to have a veteran to put you in their litter and look after you until your ready to leave the nest...
