ESPN.com‘s John Clayton mentions that the Buccaneers starting running back job is Doug Martin‘s to lose. “I think it’s gonna be Doug Martin‘s job to lose,†said Clayton. “… I think in the end, Martin’s gonna win that starting job, and he’s probably gonna win it pretty convincingly.†This has been the consensus from a number of people around the league, so it’s really not surprising to hear Clayton endorse Martin for the starting role. Martin has the potential to be a featured back in the NFL, which is clearly something that LeGarrette Blount‘s skill set. Seems like a lot of the nfl is going that way. Hell if i was a coach Id want 3 guys sharing carries. Keep your guys healthy, fresh and use the right guy for the right situation.
Blount SUCKS as a short yardage back. Bring in the rookie on 3rd downs, see how he does, and go from there.
yep, teams that are successful have a stable of backs. a lot of injuries occur at the RB position and teams know that in today's offenses, you don't need a $15 mill/yr stud running back. it's smarter to have a few good rb's that you can rotate and not drop off greatly if a guy goes down. the run game is now set up by the pass game in this league so running backs are just complementary players.
