Seconds after 14-year-old Akeem Havens said he hoped to meet Ben Roethlisberger, the Pro Bowl quarterback walked into the media room at the Steelers' South Side facility on Thursday. With a black playbook in his hand and a perturbed look on his face, Roethlisberger said to his newest teammate, "Hey, what's going on here? We don't have time for this. We have practice. Are you ready to practice?" "Let's go," Havens said with a smile. This was part of ESPN's "My Wish" Series. The Steeles and the Make-A-Wish Foundation partnered together to bring Havens a day with the Steelers that included lunch with the team, video games with Roethlisberger and a touchdown Havens would never forget. "The smile on (Havens') face is so amazing," Roethlisberger said. "To think his one wish is to come hang out with us is touching, because so many days we don't want to be here, and he wants to be here. It puts things in perspective. It's just awesome to be able to help him out." Havens has been a quadriplegic since the age of seven. It resulted from a car accident. Havens is also fighting kidney failure. thats awesome of Big Ben to do. I've seen almost all of them, my favorite has to be the Kid beating Kobe in the game of Pig. He hit that half court shot, and kobe just looked around " You serious? " lol. Glad Athletes do this though, just shows how far a little heart can go.
I'd put it as a headline, but the headline's seem to be for the convists only... I was happy to see this. I love when teams do the little things for people who are in tough situations. I'm always relieved to hear about these stories. It's refreshing to hear something good instead of who wants this and who's not doing that and who got arrested. That crap gets old!
I'd like to see more top stories like this instead of those same old "look who's in trouble this week" stories as well.
Ben's a really good guy. During the Eastern Conference finals he invited another young kid who had cancer up to his luxury suite and before the kid left, he invited him to the Steelers' practice.
yeah that was funny [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pWpxWNzB4w&feature=related"]YouTube - Kobe Bryant charity[/ame]
Those stories are all really good... The one with McNabb and the Eagles was touching as well... This is pretty good too... www.youtube.com/v/hbjB1ZeUK1c
