Steelers president Art Rooney II said the Rooney Rule, which requires NFL teams to interview at least one minority candidate for all head coach openings, might have to be reviewed, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The league had eight new head coaches hired for the 2012 season, but not one was a minority. Two of the head coaches who were fired -- Lovie Smith and Romeo Crennel -- were African-Americans, dropping the number of African-American head coaches in the league from five to three.

The rule was named for Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, who also is attending the meetings. The younger Rooney said the rule might be discussed this week at the meetings.

"I think it needs to be reviewed, let's put it that way," Art Rooney II said. "I think when it was first put in, I think everybody felt that it was having the desired effect. Obviously this year was, from the standpoint of the Rooney Rule, you might say even though everybody complied with the rule, the fact that there were no minority coaches hired was something that people want to talk about and really talk about -- whether we are developing minority coaches in a satisfactory manner and what programs we could implement that might help advance that effort."

In the next few years, some minority signings will probably be made mandatory. If there are no minority coaches left, a team with a vacancy will probably be forced to fill it with a minority candidate

This rule is stupid. Shouldn't the most qualified person get the job? Forcing someone to hire someone that may not fit their scheme is beyond stupid. I know what they are trying to do here but I feel this is the wrong way about it.

its not forcing to hire, its requiring an interview.
