There used to be a time long, long ago -- say, two or three years -- when NFL veterans weren't very impressed with rookies, especially those who had yet to play a down in the league. Last year, though, Detroit Lions veterans were singing the praises of rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford during his first training camp. This season, they have been bowled over by another rookie, running back Jahvid Best. "In my nine or 10 years of being here, I don't think we've had a running back with his skill set, the way he can cut and get upfield and his quickness, that stopping and starting and getting up to full speed," Lions veteran tackle Jeff Backus said. "From watching Barry Sanders when I was a kid, he's got a lot of his traits." Barry Sanders? First-ballot Hall of Famer Barry Sanders? "I hate to tag him with that, but he does," Backus said. "He's like the kid in Tennessee (Chris Johnson) who can take the ball at any point and score from anywhere on the field. Hopefully, we can take advantage of what he brings to the table." Surely, no other veteran would compare an unproven rookie with one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. "(Best) has got a good feel for the game and good vision," Lions linebacker Julian Peterson said. "As long as the offensive line gives him a little room, I think he'll take care of the rest, like Barry or one of those types of guys." Source: MLive.com
I was about to say it's too early to make that comparison but that is the only guy the Lions know they can compare him to.
way too early.......... I really do hope he does have the skill set and can use it like Barry Sanders but I do not want to get my hopes up.
