I think the point they were making is that they move Newman around and use him as the nickel corner in multiple receiver sets to cover the slot and they want him ready to do that job. Playing in effect two spots means their is more things he needs to get down (his role in certain defensive signals and his ability to react to formation changes/shifts by the offense).

 

I see what your saying, but he's been doing that since at least 2006
