The Houston Texans activated nine-time Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed from the physically unable to perform list and released 20 players, including veteran cornerback Elbert Mack, in a series of moves designed to get their roster to the NFL-mandated limit of 53 for the start of the 2013 season. Reed, 34, signed a three-year, $15 million contract this offseason but underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a small labral tear in his hip. Had Reed stayed on the PUP list, he would not have been able to play for the first six weeks of the season. Others that were released were defensive ends Keith Browner and Delano Johnson, tight end Jake Byrne, cornerback Roc Carmichael, fullback Tyler Clutts, linebackers Cameron Collins and Mike Mohamed, wide receivers Andy Cruse and EZ Nwachukwu, guard/centers Tyler Horn and Alex Kupper, running backs Dennis Johnson and Deji Karim, safeties Orhian Johnson and Jawanza Starling; defensive linemen Daniel Muir and Chris Jones, and offensive tackle Nate Menkin. In addition, the Texans placed wide receiver Alan Bonner, offensive tackle Brennan Williams and linebacker Trevardo Williams on the reserve/injured list and waived defensive tackle David Hunter and wide receiver Mike Smith with an injury settlement.
