CLEVELAND (AP)—Jim Thome took the stage at the City Club on Oct. 25, and spoke in generalities about continuing his career. On Friday, he got a little more specific. Despite being acquired by the Indians for the pennant race in August, reuniting the record-setting slugger with a team and city that adores him, Thome agreed Friday to sign a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. Thome’s $1.25 million, one-year deal with the Phillies—another of his former teams—is contingent on passing a physical, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because nothing can be finalized until the 41-year-old takes the medical exam. Thome can't play 1st base anymore, can he? With no DH in the NL, he will be limited to being a pinch hitter all year long.
I could only imagine this is a temporary fix at first base. Otherwise, it's a strange signing. Nice bat off the bench...but he can't play the field.
And he'll be able to get some playing time with Howards injury. He plays once or twice a week. PH off the bench. Win for everyone!
Leaving Cleveland for Philly again eh Thome? lol. I think he plays this season than retires under Charlie. Great for Thome, for the Phillies and for everyone involved.
with no DH in the national league the only reason I see for this is as a pinch hitter late in the game. specificially for the pitcher
Saying that he'll be a bench player but they are trying to use Thome to help recruit Cuddyer as well...
also heard that he is going to florida early to try and work his fielding - may get a game or two at 1st. i love the move. still got my thome jersey .....
