The wait for Colin McCarthy to get back in the fight for the Titans middle linebacker job will continue at least another week.

The third-year pro, who sat out Thursday’s preseason opener against the Redskins because of a hamstring injury, will miss the Aug. 17 game against the Bengals as well, coach Mike Munchak said on Friday.

Moise Fokou started at middle linebacker against the Redskins and played well, Munchak said, but McCarthy remains very much a contender to win the job.

“When you know a player well, I think he is going to be in the mix no matter what we do, no matter when he is ready,â€￾ Munchak said. “The linebacker position is a position that if you can help in some capacity, you’re going to be in there. It’s just a matter of when Colin is back in there and how he is feeling.â€￾

Right tackle David Stewart is expected to be back in the lineup after missing Thursday’s game with leg soreness, while kicker Rob Bironas (back) is also expected to play against the Bengals.

Center Brian Schwenke (hamstring) is expected to return to practice this week, and might play.
