According to Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, Dallas quarterback Tony Romo successfully underwent season-ending surgery on his back on Friday morning. The Cowboys have officially placed Romo on the injured reserve list. He will not be active for Sunday's Eagles-Cowboys game or at any point for the rest of this season.

Earlier in the week, a report from Adam Schefter had stated Romo was ruled out for the year, but the Cowboys wouldn't confirm that report. Either the Cowboys thought Romo could actually play or they were just trying to save face in regards to the leaked report. (My guess is the latter.)

So if there was any doubt that Romo wouldn't miss Sunday's game, doubt no longer. He is officially out. Veteran backup Kyle Orton gets the starts at quarterback and 41 year old Jon Kitna will be his backup. Romo's absence is obviously a big loss for the Cowboys. Say what you want about Romo, but he's a good QB, and certainly better than his replacements.

Romo is just the second Cowboy to be ruled out this week. Dallas linebacker Sean Lee (neck) was ruled out on Wednesday.

The Eagles and Cowboys square off on Sunday Night Football in a game where the winner earns the NFC East crown and a playoff spot while the loser leaves empty handed.
