FOXBOROUGH, Mbutt. - Rookie Brian Hoyer staked his claim to be Tom Brady's backup. After Eli Manning and David Carr passed the Giants to a 21-point first-quarter lead, Hoyer brought the Patriots back for a 38-27 exhibition win Thursday night. The undrafted free agent from Michigan State helped his chances to become Tom Brady's primary backup by throwing for one touchdown and leading three drives that ended with BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushing for scores. hoyer looked shaky at first but then got his act together and played well with poise. I'd feel better with a veteran backup but this guy looks like a solid prospect/player for the team
He recovered and won the game against the 3rd string defence of the Giants effectively.....and that is no surprise. They haven't played particularly well in pre-season (or for that matter the 3rd string offence). It was 3 and out against the Giants starters (who were probably 1st team minus a few, call them the 1st and a 1/2 team). When the backups came in he naturally played better against worse quality players.
lol...and hoyer didn't play with a single NE starter the whole game...so he played against the giants starters with backups for a while
