Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is active for Sunday's game against the Panthers, suiting up just days after his two-year-old son died.

He said, in a text to Fox Sports, that he believes "God wants good to come from" him persevering through tragedy to play.

"My brother passed the night before the combine and I decided to go through with it. The same reason why I will play this week. You may ask why? God wants good to come from it," Peterson said. "We mourn and grieve but heaven had the baddest welcoming party for my son. That knowledge gives me peace. I'm still hurt and feel the pain of life, but I'm able to function because of the peace and joy of knowing my loved ones are in a much better place."

SteveRobWhatever's Take: It's a horrible story and your heart goes out to the families touched by this tragedy. Peterson was completely estranged from his son, just finding out three months ago about him when his mother approached him. The first time he actually met his son, he was in the hospital on life-support. I can't imagine where his head is today, but you wonder what type of effort he's going to be able to gut out. What a tragic tale...
