Wade Phillips Might Be Done In Dallas After Latest Bad Loss

Only 13 NFL teams made a coaching change in the midst of a season from 2000-09 and just two of those switches were made by teams that begun the season with realistic Super Bowl dreams: the 2000 Redskins, where young, imperious owner Dan Snyder canned Norv Turner after spending large to sign Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Jeff George and Mark Carrier; and the 2001 Vikings, who melted down miserably a year after reaching the NFC championship game under Dennis Green. These examples are what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has to consider as he decides whether to fire coach Wade Phillips in the wake of Sunday night's second embarrassment on national television in 14 days (with a home drubbing by Jacksonville in between) that dropped Dallas to a stunning 1-7, a year after its 11-5 NFC East championship season. At least Jones could blame the loss to the Giants on the shock of losing quarterback Tony Romo to a broken left collarbone in the second quarter (Dallas was winning when Romo was hurt).

I was against it before because it seemed pointless to fire him, but.....

1- This team needs a jolt, at least some positve momentum. We are simply not going to get it under Phillips at this point

2- We need to play young players like McGee, Lee, Choice, AOA when he comes back, Church and or McCray, maybe even Sam Young. Wont happen under Phillips

He also made it seem like a player(s) may get cut as well. My Guess is Scandrick and/or Ball in a John Roper move.........Most definatly wouldn't be opposed

Apparently he's going to be fired by wednesday.

We should cut Scandrick and move Ball to CB.

Personally I would rather cut both and Trail by Fire the youngun's. See what we have in McCann, Church, McCray, and when he is healthy AOA.

Ball and Scan have no long term value to us anymore. Ball is a FA at the end of the year, and Scandrick has regessed two years in a row to the point that he is actually a downgrade from Jaques Reeves

I don't care, alot of guys quit on Wade. McCann is fine back there returning kickoffs, More Church and McCray is fine, Less Olshansky alot less, need to give Ratliff a kick in the ass, Brooking should be released, more Butler, and more Brandon Williams. We really could make alot of changes and should whether they'll happen I don't know. I imagine Garrett will be promoted to head coach for the time being which is just fine. It's not like were going to go and Cowher, Gruden, or anyone right now Garrett is going to head coach and try to get this team back together and win some football games.

I think firing Wade is the only way to get those guys any playing time.

Im not a huge McGee fan, but I wouldnt mind starting him the rest of the way. Screw, he starts 8 games and has 4 good ones, we might be able to get a choice pick for him, or not get completly heck if Romo goes down again........or if he completly sucks, we know he has no future and find a better backup

  8. What would the Cowboys do if they get the No. 1 pick in the draft next year?

Also with all the "Garrett is Jones coach in waiting talk" I like how it came down to utter embarrassment for him to turn it over to him

IMO Garrett is walking into a lame duck situation unless he wins out

My guess would be Buffalo would have the #2 pick and trading down is actually doable

We are paying Romo too much to draft Luck.

  10. Actually.....a quarterback came to mind when I first pondered that thought. A new regime sometimes means a new quarterback. Romo will be 31 and coming off a broken collarbone but he is getting paid more than $60M.....they may ultimately pass on Luck.

But a potential franchise passer out of Stanford would be hard to pass on. Luck is a smart kid with all the talent in the world.

Its depends on how you can structure a deal I guess. Its never really the total amount you have to worry about, just the amount in any given year.

If we pry Harbaugh from Stanford, then Im a little more interested in Luck

  12. I could see a scenario were Harbaugh comes in and drafts Luck.....teams nowadays steer clear of trading up for that pick because of the potential cost in draft picks and contract for that player.

Harbaugh wouldn't demand complete control......but it seems Jerry may do whatever he needs to do to right the ship.....even if it means hiring another Parcells type.

    I agree Joe...

Let Garrett finish out the season. They gave him all that money to be the coach in waiting, lets see what he can do.

But what players do you ultimately release? Scandrick? Who else? Brooking? Kitna can;t run that offense either sit him and start teh third string guy? They should have did this after the Jaguars game. Doing this before heading into NY is a bad idea. I mean it can't get any worse. But still, a divisional opponent and a big draw on TV.

    **********Automerged Doublepost**********

Jones needs guys that get the right personnel and not the best talent. Parcells has that going and Jerry needed to mingle in it with getting TO. BEcause of Parcells leaving, Romo IMO, would have matured into a much better Quarterback than he already is.

LOL, Maybe Jerry calls Bill Parcells.

lol, we already lost 45-7 on national TV and would have been 52 if if wasnt mercy from of all teams the Packers. A move now could go either way in that respect. It could make the team utter chaos, or it could pin some guys backs to the wall. Three weeks ago had the makings of a competive game.

Its hard to say how much Jones really controls nowadays anyways after 2008. Stephan cut Owens and Pac Man and drafted, at least Sean Lee and AOA. Jerry drafted Dez Bryant.

Personally dont want a "complete control" coach. Unless its Parcells prior to Dallas (didnt work out that well here) or Billicheck or Holmgren (however his personel moves really fell off towards the end in Seattle) it rarely works

    **********Automerged Doublepost**********

Thats hard to say, Romo was more Payton/Haley then Parcells.

I think its less maturity then system. Garretts system allowed Romo to be a gunslinger. A "live by/die by" type. 2007 and 2008 he was too turnover prone to make a deep run. Last year he was the type of QB that could make a deep run. He played a more heady game, didnt create as may big play's, but rarely turned it over either.

I don't think you have a choice, fire Wade, give Garrett the keys and see if he can do anything in the 2nd half of the season.

Only thing is who would run the defense, not sure if the Cowboys have anyone that is capable, but with the way they've played it can't get much worse.

I think it would Pasquinoli, or even Campo.

After the loss Im comforting myself with thought of Col. Kurtz as Jones and brandishing a bloody machette saying "People will suffer".......I watched Apocolypse Now last night

    Roy31 Hall Of Famer

Ilol. I believe if Wade isn't fired tomorrow he might just resign. Also he said "People" will suffer. Could that mean multiple coaches are getting fired plus the possibility of players getting released? I hope Brooking is one of these people that suffers. I'm thinking he's also looking at firing DeCamillis.

  20. Jihad Joe

    Jihad Joe Life to Infidels

Im taking it as players and coachs

Also he alluded to careers.........maybe that means Garrett is gone too

I think Decamillis is overrated. ST's improved under him for 2 reasons.......1- They were irrationally bad in 2008. 2- Buehler WAS a machine on KO's

Im wondering if there is anything to this "handshake deal" a while back, guess we;ll find out. Coaching turnover = Exciting stuff
