What Was The Reason For This?

I Remembered a few players wore the extra layer over their helmet, when I was growing up... [see the example above, only picture I could find]... Does anyone know why they wore this? I never see it anywhere that I re-call anymore.

 

It was supposed to help with concussions.

 

Im guessing for helmet to helmet contact protection, but then your not doing any damage to the opponent either

it's called a Pro Cap...and it's actually better known as the "Gazoo" Helmet because it makes you look like the Great Gazoo :icon_cheesygrin:

Didn't they redesign them? Had more of a bicyclist helmet look?
