There were reports out there that quite a few teams were interested in trading for DeSean Jackson when the Eagles had "no intent" of trading him. Then it became a case of the Eagles "not actively" shopping him. But then came a moment of silence and then the surprising outright release due to "gang related issues."

So where are the potential landing spots for Jackson? So far we've heard: Kansas City, Oakland, New York with either the Jets or the Giants. Rod Rivera in Carolina has expressed interested, but word is Gettleman won't allow it. Tampa Bay has been mentioned and so have the Rams. Then there are the "original" two teams that were inquiring about Jackson...San Francisco and New England. If San Francisco is inquiring, then Seattle must also be inquiring...seeing that both teams are competing to see who has the bigger, better, shinier anything.

    So who will it be?!?

I'm hoping for Oakland simply because it would be by far the funniest possible outcome.

Oakland would actually have a pretty nice group of weapons on offense with Jackson there...

Schaub (upgrade at QB), MJD and McFadden at RB. James Jones and DeSean Jackson at WR. Definitely in a position to draft WR Sammy Watkins or TE Ebron. Not to mention Denarius Moore and Rod Streater depth at WR.

Oakland would be scary if he went there for about three games and then he would pitch a baby about something. I don't think he is worth the trouble he brings just for the talent on the field. It would have to have a very very strong locker room. If that is the case the best for him would be San Fran. I just hope he straightens his act up before he is out of the league. You are representing a large corporation and it does matter who you hang with on your off time.

He didn't exactly tear up the locker room. Insiders such as Ray Didinger say that he pretty much kept to himself. He didn't have close friends on the team, but he wasn't screaming up and down that he wasn't being treated right to them either.

I'm a fan of Desean but I hope he ends up elsewhere. I don't really care about or put much stock in the locker room cancer talk or the gang affiliation nonsense, and I think he's a great receiver that has a lot to offer the right team...in fact he'd be about as perfect a fit in SF as you could possibly ask for, as far as what most people think is lacking on offense and ST...but it would make life a lot harder in the next couple years as far as keeping players around long-term. I don't think he's going to end up getting what he was in line to make in PHI, but he's not going to play for free and we have a bunch of really high-end contracts coming up in the next couple years that are going to be hard enough to fit in without having another huge contract on the books to work around.

If we were to bring Desean in, it would certainly spell the end for someone else, likely Crabtree, and I much prefer what Crabs offers the team as a player over Desean. I'd rather roll with the incumbents (which isn't a half bad group anyway), draft a good prospect to develop on a cheap rookie contract (PLEASE trade up for Evans/Benjamin), and work on extending the guys that got the team where it is now instead. Thats been working beautifully lately, don't throw a wrench in it with Desean. Iupati, Kap, Crabs, Aldon, are all coming due here soon, and with the exception of Crabtree, they are all on relatively cheap rookie deals that are probably going to turn into high 7's to 8 figures a year (or close) monsters that are going to eat up huge amounts of payroll. I don't think Iupati will be a 49er this time next year, though I expect they'll make it work for the others...but regardless, it's not the time to be making big expensive splashes in FA.

Plus, I think the undersized whole burner mostly one-dimensional deep threat WR is a highly overrated concept in football for the most part anyway, and certainly not worth shelling out the money that guys like Desean and Mike Wallace have commanded recently. They have their place, sure, but give me a Brandon Marshall/Jeffery/VJackson/Megatron/Demariyus/Andre Johnson type any day of the week and twice on Sunday. So on any given route Desean might be 5 yards deeper into it when the ball gets there thanks to his speed, big freaking deal. Give me a 5 yard shorter route being run by a physically dominant pass-catcher who will out-fight the opponent for the ball, who will run over and through people after the catch, and I'll show you a far more productive offense overall. Guaranteed.

    Well F'n said...

Big physical WRs who go after the ball & usually dwarf CBs make for above average/'great' QBs nowadays.

Used to be QBs were rated for accuracy but today's NFL in their love for audience pleasing aerial shows has talking heads & announcers raving about pin point accuracy like 'put it where only the WR could get it' down thru 'threw it to the back shoulder'/'threw it behind the receiver' BS. Sure, there are times it's true but with the game geared toward the passing game that restricts Ds, speed burners are just a luxury while big WRs that excel in short, medium, & long patterns are a necessity especially if a team ends up going to their QB back ups.

Cutler/McCown here in Chi-Town last year are great examples. Marshall/ Jeffery/ & to some extent Earl Bennett, had some acting like McCown was the 2nd coming & Cutler was finally getting his groove on. Without those monsters at WR, the villagers would have been storming the Halas Hall walls.

Matter of fact, the game continues at this pace where teams are looking to find taller, stronger WRs out of college to convert to CB to help combat the offensive game style & guys like Jackson may turn into the kick-off/punt returners of tomorrow anyway...

The bottom line on this is who has enough cap space to afford him,and how much of a pay cut is he willing to take?
Courtesy of "Over The Cap" I have some figures that would indicate Jackson has a very limited market. The only teams that can realistically afford him are the Jets,Bengals,Browns & Jags.
Most teams have done what they need in FA and have enough cap space for their rookies, with the smart teams also leaving a buffer for "unexpected events" like season ending injured player who needs to be replaced short term.
This whole situation seems very strange to me and it would appear that there is a lot going on behind the scene that we don't know about. To cut a guy for "gang related issues" is something I would think may open up a Pandoras box as to: a) can you prove that? b) could Jackson sue Philly for defamation if they can't prove it? c) is this an issue of racial profiling? :dunno:

but the Eagles didn't say they cut him for that did they? I heard that from ESPN and not from the team officials.

His salary was enough reason, really. They dont have to publicly say what it was for, we can infer whatever we want about it but it doesnt really matter. It wasn't a spur of the moment thing, they've been planning it, or planning for its eventuality, for a while. Made sure Maclin and Cooper were signed, went out and got Sproles to hopefully fill the little fast dude role, got all their ducks in a row and then bam. He's a standoffish rod by most accounts, he probably rubbed Kelly the wrong way and didn't buy into the team concept that it seems like Kellys trying to instill. Plus he makes a whole crapload of money for what he does and maybe they simply felt they could fill his role with other players, for much cheaper, and use the money elsewhere. Plus he's a rod so.

Whatever though, he does have a ton of talent, if someone can either get him to buy in, or figure out how to make it work for them despite his being a rod, they'll get a hell of a player that could wreak havoc as a complementary player in the right system. He'd be sick on the Bears. Lions. Doesn't have the demeanor to be a complementary option though, he's the kind of guy that will take money and the spotlight to be a "#1" on a bad team run by a crapty organization, over being a piece of the puzzle of a contending team. So, someones probably going to desperately overpay him, try and make him the primary guy, and hello Dolphins last year.
