If there is such a thing as the JaMarcus Russell sweepstakes, they have begun. However, the sweepstakes won’t be quite as big as say a guy like Peyton Manning. However, he has attracted several teams, according to Ian Rappaport. In fact, Russell worked out for the Chicago Bears this past week. Seeing as they already have Jay Cutler on the roster, Russell would not be competing for the starting gig. However, theres no reason why he couldn’t outplay Josh McCown for the backup job. Besides Chicago, what’s a realistic option for the former No. 1 overall pick and LSU standout. The guy who once could throw 60 yards from his knees has been out of football for almost 4 years. Teams that have full fledged starters but not a solid backup should look at Russell. He’s still just 27 years old, and with the dire way he’s been working out, it’s safe to say he’ll be in shape. I feel like the Dallas Cowboys, San Diego Chargers, and St. Louis Rams all could be potential fits for JaMarcus, as their quarterback situations all have a theme of uncertainty. Dallas has Tony Romo, and with that ridiculous contract, they want to get the best they can out of him before he really hits the wall. After all, Romo isn’t a bad quarterback, but his inconsistency and non clutch ability haunts him. Russell can step in and compete with Kyle Orton for the backup job. San Diego is still with longtime underachiever Philip Rivers. Rivers has never brought the Bolts to a Super Bowl like they were almost annually predicted to a few years ago. He is also another inconsistent signal caller. The back up in San Diego is Charlie Whitehurst, so the Chargers could use a little competition there. Lastly, the Rams’ former No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford looks like he is developing into a bust. He really hasn’t gotten St. Louis to the next level and playoffs. Granted he has been hurt here and there, but this is really a make or break year for him. Even if he shines, the backup is Kellen Clemens, and with Bradford’s injury history, it may be wise for St. Louis to fix that reliability issue and perhaps put Russell in that spot. Overall, it has been impressive to see JaMarcus Russell’s determination and will to get to where he is now, being worked out by the Chicago Bears. Ultimately, I believe he’ll be on an NFL roster this season, and it will be exciting to find out which team.
