The Browns made a big statement when they drafted quarterback Johnny Manziel just months ago. They wanted a big name player with superstar potential. They wanted a quarterback to be the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future. Incumbent quarterback Brian Hoyer is a good player, but he doesn't draw that superstar attention that Manziel has been generating.
So it seems like a no-brainer that Manziel should be the starter of the Cleveland Browns right?
Not exactly. This is one of the most interesting quarterback competitions in the league right now because it's pitting up two very different quarterbacks. Manziel represents the future, an investment that could pay off huge for team in the future. A huge pay off not only monetarily but in the form of wins. Johnny Manziel's jerseys are the top selling jerseys right now. Brian Hoyer jerseys are a little further down on that list.
However, jersey sales are not an indicator or anything. You can look to the sale of Tim Tebow jerseys to back up that claim.
Hoyer is on top of the depth chart for training camp and it has been made apparent early on the he will be the starter. This may be true but their hands may be tied as the voices of Manziel supporters get loud enough.
It doesn't seem as though Manziel will dethrown Hoyer in the next few months because of his higher comprehension of the offense as well as his experience. Regardless of this, the Cleveland Browns will find it very difficult to quell the chants from Manziel fans. Fans seem divided as to which quarterback will be the starter this year and either side can make a case for their quarterback.
It will be interesting to see which direction the Browns go with this because it will have vast implications. Once you choose to start Manziel, you really can't go back to Hoyer no matter how he pans out.
