Houston Texans Trade T. J. Yates

June 19, 2014 by Ryan Puckett

The word coming out of Houston after their first minicamp practice was that the Texans had cut T. J. Yates.  Apparently

The Texans receive Akeem Dent from the Atlanta Falcons for backup quarterback T. J. Yates.

other teams around the league heard about the Texans about to cut Yates and several of the teams started offering deals to the Texans so they could be sure and get Yates.

The Atlanta Falcons won the bidding war by trading 4th year linebacker Akeem Dent to the Texans for Yates.  Dent has  good size at 6-1, 239 pounds and has been clocked at 4.78 in the 40 yard dash.  Last season he started 7 games and totaled 51 tackles.  Dent's best season came in 2012 when he started 13 games for the Falcons, making 65 tackles.

In my opinion when you compare Dent with the linebackers already on the Texans roster he is going to have a hard time making the team.

The Texans also signed rookie free agent defensive lineman Tim Jackson and 4th year offensive tackle Will Yeatman.

Jackson is 6-4, 292 pounds and runs a 4.9 40.  He has prototype size and speed and is an excellent pickup at this point in the offseason and in my opinion he is better than some of the defensive linemen that were drafted.

Yeatman is 6-6, 315 pounds, runs a 5.14 40 yard dash and will compete for a backup tackle spot with the Texans.  Yeatman has prototype size and speed, but the Texans are set with their two starting tackles in Derek Newton at right tackle and Duane Brown at left tackle.
