Matt Holliday is slated to miss an undisclosed amount of time after undergoing successful appendectomy surgery Friday afternoon—a day after the Cardinals' 11 inning loss to the San Diego Padres.
STLToday.com reports that the Cardinals hope to determine whether or not the team will put Holliday on the DL by Sunday, but also says everything went fine with the procedure.
And the hits keep coming, don't they?
The other issue here is who, exactly, the Cardinals will put into Holliday’s place.
The initial move will probably be to place Lance Berkman in the everyday role which increases his overall projected fantasy value (ca-chinnnng!).
But you may want to also place Cardinals outfielder Adron Chambers on your watch list as well.
Chambers hit .283 in 112 games for Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis, and could platoon with Berkman if the Cardinals decide to matchup Berkman against right handed hitters only.
Other waiver wire candidates with a 10% or less ownership average could also be:
- J.D. Drew, Boston Red Sox
- Cameron Maybin, San Diego Padres
- Ben Francisco, Philadelphia Phillies
- Pat Burrell, San Francisco Giants
- Carlos Gomez, Milwaukee Brewers
Obviously none of these players are quite up to snuff when compared to Holliday, but all of these players will see regular playing time and are perfectly acceptable replacements especially in deep mixed leagues, and NL Only formats.
