MLB 2010 Closer Rankings: Here’s Hoping You Didn’t Pay For Saves!

April 18, 2010 by Kurt Turner

People drafted Jonathan Papelbon in the top-50 overall players but he isn't even one of the top 5 closers so far.

Remember how we told you to not pay for your closers?

Those of you silly enough to pay for saves might be kicking yourself at the moment. Jonathan Papelbon has some inflated numbers and studs like Jonathan Broxton and Francisco Rodriguez haven't even recorded their first saves of the year. This is exactly why we tell you to hold off on saves and grab guys like Billy Wagner, Octovio Dotel and Carlos Marmol!

Make sure that if you only have two solid closers or you have three iffy ones, you keep checking out your league's free agency for saves. Keep coming back to Fantasy Knuckleheads for all the big time breaking news concerning closers!

This year is particularly peculiar because after two weeks there is already great disarray in the ranks. Let's check it out:

Key:

JS = Job Security - Good, Fair, Poor

Elite Closers
Team JS Not Far Behind One Liners
1 Mariano Rivera NYY G The best closer in fantasy until proven otherwise
2 Jonathan Broxton LAD G He might not have a save but that's not his fault
3 Jonathan Papelbon BOS G He might be hitting hiccups but great job security
4 Joakim Soria KC G KC is bad but Soria still puts up elite numbers
5 Jose Valverde DET G Bringing back the magic this year
6 Brian Wilson SF G Wilson looks to improve on his elite 2009 numbers
Good to have
7 David Aardsma SEA G Elite K's from a closer with 40+ saves
8 Trevor Hoffman MIL G You have to wonder when age will catch up
9 Heath Bell SD G He will get trade, the question is "where?"
10 Carlos Marmol CHI G He's going to walk people but looks solid so far
11 Francisco Cordero CIN G Guys like this help you win fantasy leagues
12 Andrew Bailey OAK G Looks healthy enough!
13 F.  Rodriguez NYM G Not an elite closer anymore, but still great
14 Ryan Franklin STL G Another Dave Duncan success story
15 Billy Wagner ATL G He already blew a save but just a minor hiccup
16 Rafael Soriano TB G Injuries are always a concern for him.
17 Octavio Dotel PIT G No reason to doubt yet
18 Jon Rauch MIL G I remain skeptical until further results
Tread Lightly...
19 Chad Qualls ARI G Juan Gutierrez I've never really been a big fan of Qualls
20 Matt Capps WAS G Capps has answered the call so far but can he keep it up?
21 Kevin Gregg TOR F Jason Frasor Ever heard "Easy come easy go"?
22 Matt Lindstrom HOU F Brandon Lyon It's bad to have closers on teams that can't win.
23 Leo Nunez FLA F Dan Meyer Saves at the expense of ERA and WHIP. Your choice
Wildcards!
Current RP
Huston Street COL F Franklin Morales I have a feeling he won't come back right
Brad Lidge PHI F Ryan Madson His arm strength is slowly building back up
