New York Giants Should Pursue Cowboys’ DeMarcus Ware Heavily if Justin Tuck Leaves as a Free Agent

February 25, 2014 by Doug Rush

DeMarcus Ware

DeMarcus Ware a New York Giant? Don't laugh, because with how the offseason is shaping, it could be a possibility.

Lets break it down a little better to make it clearer. The Dallas Cowboys are a good $20 million over the salary cap and Ware is making $12.5 million in 2014, but will count for $16 million on the salary cap. So that means Jerry Jones has a very tough choice to make in the next couple of weeks.

He can try to ask Ware to re-structure his deal, or, if he doesn't, he can do the unthinkable and cut his long-time and potential Hall of Fame defensive end after nine seasons with the team because the Cowboys payroll is an absolute mess.

So, where do the New York Giants fit into this whole situation? The Giants could potentially lose Justin Tuck as a free agent and their GM Jerry Reese has said that he's willing to let Tuck hit the open market when free agency begins in the NFL on March 11.

So after watching Ware dominate and at times, destroy the Giants and make life for Eli Manning miserable, what an ideal situation it would be if the Giants were to sign Ware this offseason. And why not, especially considering Jason-Pierre Paul is coming off an injury-riddled 2013 season and Damontre Moore didn't play enough to be considered a starter next season, plus Mathias Kiwanuka's name has come up as a potential salary cap casualty, thus putting the Giants in the market for a defensive end, even if it's in the short-term.

The Giants won't have a ton of money to sign Ware, but maybe the idea of playing against his former team and getting some revenge against the team that potentially cuts him is ideal enough for Ware to jump ship in the NFC East. Plus, the Cowboys have not exactly been a playoff contender over the last three years considering they've finished 8-8 each year and have blown chances to make the playoffs in each season to the Giants, Redskins and Eagles, so the idea of getting to the playoffs again and winning a Super Bowl with a team that has won two in the last seven years is another ideal thing for Ware.

Again, this is all speculation, especially since Ware is still a member of the Cowboys and there is a chance that maybe Jones doesn't cut him and finds a way to hang on to his star defensive end, in which case, this topic becomes a moot point. But if he does get cut, then the Giants would be crazy to not even consider it, because putting an elite pass rusher on their defense, one who has made life for their team hell over the last 10 years, would instantly make them a better team.
