UFC 130 News Plus Bonus Video of Mir vs Nelson

May 17, 2011 by Kurt Turner

UFC officials have made their final adjustments to the UFC 130 card set for May 28, at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Headlined by Quinton Jackson taking on Matt Hamill, 20 UFC stars will be looking to settle the score with their opponents in hopes of receiving a title shot in their weight classes. Here is all the latest news related to UFC 130.

Originally set to be the third and hopefully final matchup between Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and arch rival Gray Maynard, the UFC was left scrambling, when both fighters pulled out of the match due to injuries. For the reason that champion Frankie Edgar was the first of the two fighters to pull out, the UFC officials, were trying to contact former WEC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis to replace Edgar. However, before Pettis had a chance to respond, Maynard pulled out with an apparent leg injury.

Rather than set up a brand new main event, possibly featuring Anthony Pettis, the UFC chose to move the semi main event featuring Quinton Jackson and Matt Hamill into the main event slot. The new main event went from a possible snore fest, to some intrigue, when Jackson told reporters he plans to retire in two years, when he turns 35. What’s perhaps most appealing about this fight, is that Hamill, a cast off of TUF season three, now has a chance to speed up Jackson’s retirement plans, with a victory at UFC 130.

Another fight that basically flew under the radar before the changes to the UFC 130 card was the Heavyweight fight between former champion Frank Mir and another TUF castoff, Big Country Roy Nelson. Both fighters have put on some of the most exciting fights in the Heavyweight division over the last little while. What’s more, with Brock Lesnar pulling out of UFC 131 due to illness, expect the winner of Mir vs. Nelson to be next in line for a shot at Heavyweight Champion Cain Velazquez.

But wait didn't you know that Frank Mir and Nelson have already fought.. well kind.. here's a olde but a goode

For WWE fans looking for a change the UFC 130 card could just be what turns you onto MMA.
