Once Colin Kaepernick finished running the two-minute drill in Tuesday’s practice, it was Colt McCoy’s turn to further entrench himself as the 49ers’ No. 2 quarterback.

McCoy, a three-year veteran acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, is poised to take over the top backup role that last belonged to Alex Smith.

McCoy enthusiastically described the 49ers’ offense as “game-plan specific,†meaning: “We have the potential to do a lot of different things. It’ll be fun.â€

With Kaepernick heading into his first full season as the 49ers’ starter, McCoy is competing with third-year veteran Scott Tolzien and multi-dimentional rookie B.J. Daniels for backup roles.

“He’s doing well picking up the system and he’s focused on doing well,†49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. “A lot of things motivate him to work hard.â€

As the No. 2 quarterback, McCoy will likely spend a lot of time facing the 49ers’ first-string defense in practice, and that excites him.

“The defense is as good as advertised,†McCoy said. “That alone will make me a better quarterback, going against that every day … lining up against guys with big names and have proven themselves in this league.â€
