Bears quarterback Jay Cutler suffered a thumb injury in Sunday's 31-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers, according to Fox Sports reporter and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer, and is undergoing tests to determine if it is broken. The Chicago Tribune, citing sources, reported that Cutler's thumb on his throwing hand is broken and the Bears are expecting to be without Cutler "for a while." The Chicago Tribune reported that Cutler injured the thumb following his interception when he was taken down by Chargers linebacker Donald Butler. Cutler played the entirety of the Bears win over the Chargers. He completed 18 of 31 passes for 286 yards with two touchdowns and one interception as the Bears won their fifth straight game.

Holy crap. This would be huge. The Bears were in a groove with the o line actually doing alright. But without Cutler this team won't be the same.

This is news from the media, the Bears have yet to 100% confirm this from what i've just heard. This news does suck butt though, especially when the Bears have monentum going their way right now. Yes, the rest of the Bears schedule is not a tough one but i'd feel better with Jay Cutler then Caleb Hanie the rest of the season.

It sounds like Cutler would be able to come back for the playoffs at least and I think Hanie can keep the ship afloat in the meantime. The Bears remaining schedule is Raiders, Chiefs, Broncos, Seahawks, Packers and Vikings. I'd say they need to go at least 3-3 in that stretch to hang onto a wild card spot and I think that is certainly possible. I could even see them still winning 4 of those 6 games.

Did Ben need to have surgery on his thumb too? That is the difference, at least the way Jim Miller explained it last night. That depending on where the fracture is located, that determines if surgery is needed right away or whether it can be put off for later. If Jay didn't need the surgery I'm sure he would be able to play next week too.

Personally I'd rather Jay get the surgery now and get healed 100% by the playoffs since I believe the Bears remaining schedule is still favorable for them making the playoffs. Hanie knows the offense. He stepped in and did a decent job last year in the NFCC game.

Actually I'm not even sure it has been decided if Cutler needs surgery or not, according to Lovie he is seeing a specialist today.

Sounds like Jay is going to need a pin inserted in the thumb.

Just heard Lovie Smith confirm that Cutler's thumb is indeed broken. Out 6-8 weeks.... I doubt the Bears put Cutler on IR though because if the Bears still make the playoffs, it's possible for Cutler to comeback then. This news sucks because it overshadows yesterday's win over the Chargers.

No way they put him on IR. Like I said in an earlier post, I still like the Bears chances to make the playoffs.
