The Cincinnati Bengals announced on Sunday that defensive end Derrick Harvey has been released. Harvey signed a one-year deal on March 23, 2012 in response to the team losing key contributors like Jonathan Fanene and Frostee Rucker over the offseason. Harvey, with eight career sacks in four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos, was largely expected to compete for a backup role as a defensive end. The move has curious timing, soon before the team's Sunday evening Mock Game. With 87 players on the training camp roster, including Harvey's departure, there was no need to free up space on the roster for a signing -- players on respective injury lists already count against the roster.
