Despite being savvy with restructuring deals and taking care of its own restricted free agents, there just comes a time when an $18 million cap penalty cannot be overcome by a front office. That instance happened today in the form of special-teams ace Lorenzo Alexander leaving the Redskins and signing a deal with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday afternoon, according to Fox Sports.

Alexander, who was special teams captain for the Redskins the past three seasons, led the NFL with 19 special teams tackles and earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2012.

Additionally, Alexander contributed to the team in every way imaginable, beginning his tenure in Washington as a 300-pound defensive tackle and eventually morphing into the versatile 245-pound inside/outside linebacker frame he holds today.
