New York Giants running back David Wilson left Tuesday's practice with what coach Tom Coughlin called a "burner" -- an alarming diagnosis for a player who only last week was cleared to return to the field following neck surgery.

"We were all praying that it would not be an issue, that he would be able to come back and go to work," Coughlin said. "But we'll see."

Wilson left the Giants' Week 5 loss in Philadelphia last year with a "burner" and ended up missing the remainder of the season and having spinal fusion surgery to correct a disk problem in his neck. It's possible that this injury isn't that severe, but given that it's the neck again, it's a troubling sign for Wilson and for the Giants.

Wilson was excited last Monday when doctors finally told him he'd been cleared for contact, and he's been practicing as normal with the team. Coughlin said it was unclear to him when or on what sort of play Wilson got injured Tuesday.

Wilson was the Giants' first-round pick in the 2012 draft and was one of the top kick returners in the league as a rookie. But given the starting running back's job in 2013, he struggled out of the gate. He fumbled twice in the season opener in Dallas and was benched. Once he returned to form, he hurt himself in Week 5 and hasn't played since.

If it's true that his career is over, I hope he's a smart kid with other options. Heartbreaking when this kind of thing happens. Unfortunately it's part of the game.

Report: David Wilson “needs a miracle” to come back

David Wilson has been upbeat throughout his comeback from spinal fusion surgery, even after his “burner” earlier this week.

The Giants apparently do not share that optimism.

According to Jordan Raanan and Conor Orr of NJ.com, the Giants consider him a long shot to return to the field and one source familiar with his condition said he “needs a miracle” to come back.

He’ll see a spinal specialist Monday, but the Giants seem to be bracing themselves for the possibility that Wilson might not return at all.

I just got a notification that said the doctors advised him to not play football anymore, and the giants placed him on IR.

That's too bad, but at least he is able to walk away from the game and not be paralyzed or dead.
