An NFL spokesman said Monday that Trindon Holliday's 76-yard punt return for a touchdown in Sunday's game between the Panthers and Broncos should have been overturned and ruled a touchback.

Holliday returned a Brad Nortman punt after fielding it at the Denver 24-yard line. He sped down the sideline but as he was about to cross the goal line, Holliday flipped the ball out of his hand and broke the plane without possession of the ball.

Replay official Bob Boylston confirmed the touchdown, but a spokesman said he should have stopped the game for an instant replay review.

"Because the video showed that Holliday lost possession of the ball before it broke the plane of the goal line, Boylston should have stopped the game to initiate an instant replay review," the statement said.

"Had that occurred, (referee Al) Riveron would have had the indisputable visual evidence necessary to overturn the on-field ruling."

If the replacements did this, it would be plastered all over every sports outlet and news outlet in the country right next to the 1:19 error in the Niners/Rams overtime TIE. Think one of those teams might want to have the ball for another 1:19?

at home laughing at the "real" refs wondering how their heckups are worse than the ones that has been doing this for years. still don't know how the replay ref who concurred the td didn't see the ball come out. Players should hold on the ball until completely in the end zone. Make sure it is a score then celebrate if you must. Or just do what Barry Sanders did. Just hand the ball to the ref.
