There already is a notice toward to the top of the page when a guest visits enough times/pages that recommends creating an account to participate. No, it would drive those guests who don't want to sign up yet away. Some never will sign up, but do you want to lose those that may in a week or two in a vain attempt to force them to? Look at newspaper websites, the vast majority do not require registration because they want the most eyes on the ads.
