Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman will need Tommy John surgery on his left elbow after playing in Super Bowl XLIX with torn ligaments, coach Pete Carroll said Monday.

Sherman, who suffered ligament damage in his left shoulder during the NFC Championship Game against the Packers, practiced for and played in the Super Bowl while making tackles and plays using his left arm.

Tommy John surgery is a procedure in which the ulnar collateral ligament undergoes reconstruction using a tendon from elsewhere in the body.

Meanwhile, Carroll said Monday that starting strong safety Kam Chancellor's injured left knee might be worse than originally feared.
