1. Cam Newton (Auburn) 6'5 248 Projection- 1st pick overall Where I would take him- top 15. Newton comes out of a spread type system. He has supreme athletic ability and throughout the year developed more and more as a passer. His biggest positive is his athletic ability and potential. A few major concerns with him are his pocket presence, his ability to read a defense, and his touch. 2. Blaine Gabbert (Missouri) 6'4 3/8 234 Projection- 5th pick overall Where I would take him- top 20. Gabbert also comes out of the spread. He has great accuracy within about 15 yards. After that his accuracy is shaky. He has alot of athletic ability and is very very smart. He doesn't feel the pass rush that well yet but I think a great QB coach can develop that. 3. Jake Locker (Washington) 6'2 4/8 231 Projection- 10th pick overall Where I would take him- top 20. Locker is a guy I like alot. He played with some bad teammates that really made him look worse than he was. He is a great leader and can scramble if necessary and throw on the run. His biggest positive is his potential and arm strength. His biggest negative is his shaky accuracy in the pocket and his ability to feel the pass rush. 4. Christian Ponder (FSU) 6'2 229 Projection- 15 overall Where I would take him- top 25. Ponder is an accurate, athletic, and smart QB. Perfect for a WCO scheme. He had several arm injuries which limited his effectiveness at the college level. His biggest positive is probably his accuracy which is among the draft's best. His biggest negative is probably his recurring injury issues. 5. Ryan Mallett (Arkansas) 6'6 6/8 253 Projection- Early round 2 Where I would take him- mid to late 2nd depending on scheme Mallett has the arm strength you want. Entering the league he will have arguably the leagues strongest arm. However, concerns about his decision making, mobility, and leadership have emerged. Not to mention all the off the field rumors which I am sure we are all aware of. I will say I think the off the field stuff is overblown. 6. Colin Kaepernick (Nevada) 6'4 5/8 233 Projection- Early round 2 Where I would take him- ? (unsure haven't looked at him closely enough.) Kapernick is a very athletic guy who can sling it with the best of them. He needs some polishing but has alot of untapped potential. He throws the ball with more velocity than any other QB in the draft. 7. Andy Dalton (TCU) 6'2 215 Projection- Early round 2 Where I would take him- Late 2nd (WCO) early 3rd Dalton is a smart QB who is a great leader. He will have to transition to more of a pro style offensive scheme but is an accurate QB who can run. His biggest issue is his arm strength. He can make almost any throw but the question is how much velocity can he put on it. He truly isn't a fit for every system. 8. Ricky Stanzi (Iowa) 6'4 3/8 223 Projection- 3rd Where I would take him- late 3rd Stanzi is a guy I like. He is a hard working guy with some athletic skills and he is just a smart guy who seems like a hard worker. His biggest plus is his ability to feel the pass rush and his intangibles. His biggest problem is occasionally he will check down too much and isn't what one would call a big play type QB who throws down field. 9. Greg Mcelroy (Alabama) 6'1 7/8 220 Projection- 5th Where I would take him- 5th Mcleroy is a smart safe QB. He won't win games most of the time but he won't lose them either. He will likely never be a starter but if he is given some playing time he won't embarrass himself either. 10. Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech) 6'0 6/8 217 Projection- late 4th Where I would take him- ? Taylor is a guy with supreme athletic skills. He also has a solid arm. His numbers improved greatly as a senior and he truly put up some great stats. His biggest issue is his throwing motion. It truly is unorthodox.
its funny how down you are on mallet and how down i am on gabbert. i think mallet has serious rookie of the year potential, easily the most pro ready out of the bunch depending on the team of course
I agrees with k train.....IMO mobility is over rated .....far to many great qbs were and are not mobile
Depending on how long the lockout lasts, none of these guys will be remotely close to ROY candidates...lol.
i have locker and cam higher than mallet, but cam is just there based on potential of him being amazing....honestly i dont expect much from him and think mallet is the better player. i just hate gabbert
if gabbert could go top 5 why couldnt guys like drew stanton, trent edwards, or kevin kolb...its just laughable
you have to at least be able to move in the pocket and I'm not convinced Mallett can. Think Drew Bledsoe in Dallas.
I'll put it this way.....his skill set is reminiscent of Cam Newton's but without the off-field baggage.
Look at that beanpole, you're going to tell me that you don't think he'll be easily broken in the NFL?
I say he has a better chance to last in the NFL than Mallet...... Mallett is just a cinder block with an arm.
so what just cause you can move around doesnt mean you can be a QB. dixon actually has a huge arm and is all zip, he throws missiles, and hes not frail at all he tore his knee....to me him (a heisman hopeful before he got hurt) an kapernick are very similar. sure kaepernick has like an inch and 20 pounds on dixon but size isnt everything when i say they might as well be the same person. dixon was considered a second round guy, a tier 2 guy in his draft before he got hurt
Having mobility in the pocket is vital to avoid sacks and keep plays alive. I'm not sure Mallett can hold up if he has the mobility of cement. QB's his size generally don't pan out in the NFL.
