2010 NFL Draft Second Thoughts – What Can We Expect In Round 2?

April 23, 2010 by Kurt Turner

As expected Round One of the 2010 NFL Draft proved to be an interesting affair. Lots of trades, risers and fallers, and surprise picks. From QB Jimmy Clausen's nose dive into round 2, to the Dallas Cowboys trading up for Dez Bryant (the second WR taken?) to the Denver Broncos astonishing snag of QB Tim Tebow.

This of course sets up an interesting start to Round Two. The St. Louis Rams nabbed their QB of the future Sam Bradford, with the draft's first overall pick. Surprisingly many teams in need of a QB passed over Jimmy Clausen to address other team needs. Now we're back to a fresh round, and those same teams still need QB help. The Rams have the round's opening pick and it seems likely someone may trade up to get that pick, and Clausen or perhaps QB Colt McCoy.

Below is the current order:

2010 NFL DRAFT ROUND 2 ORDER

1 (33) Rams - Will someone trade up to snag their guy here? If not they may go WR. Golden Tate?

No trade up, and the Rams take offensive tackle Rodger Saffold from Indiana. Exactly the kind of line fortification new QB Sam Bradford needs. This helps make St. Louis better up front in protecting their new investment

2 (34) Vikings (From Lions) - The Vikes need a franchise QB. But they may go RB here with Dexter McCluster or Joe McKnight. Trading back makes sense too. Then again...Rodger Saffold or Charles Brown?

The Vikings fantasy defense was already fairly stout. They just got better with Virginia CB, Chris Cook.

3 (35) Buccaneers - WR or defensive end have to addressed with their next 2 picks. Everson Griffen is a solid thought here.

Brian Price, DT: He's a hole plugger and a strong run stopper, but he wears out quickly and gives up on plays. I think they reached here, but combined with McCoy they are more solid across the line.

4 (36) Chiefs - The Kansas City Chiefs have Matt Cassel but Jimmy Clausen could be their guy and they may trade up to get him. I think the Chiefs go for Rodger Saffold or Charles Brown at OT here.

The Chiefs grab Mississippi RB Dexter McCluster, and I think this is a poor pick for KC, they had much bigger needs, and his fantasy value is very limited behind Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles. However there is buzz he may be used as a slot receiver ala Wes Welker

5 (37) Eagles (From Redskins) - They need offensive line help, but I can see them going with Nate Allen or Chris Cook here at safety or corner back.

IDP players gotta like this pick. Nate Allen, safety. He should be a burner on a solid Eagles secondary

6 (38) Browns - Mike Holmgren needs a franchise QB, he could snag Colt McCoy or Clausen here, or move up to grab one of them. I think McCoy.

The Browns go with T.J. Ward from Oregon, and I see this as a poor pick at this stage. They are trying to improve the pass defense, but they had bigger needs to address.

7 (39) Buccaneers (From Raiders through Bears) - I’m thinking they go WR here; Arrelious Benn? Clausen was in their sites in Round 1, with the Roethlisberger trade seemingly dead, will Al Davis flex here? Otherwise Rodger Saffold or Charles Brown.

As predicted Tampa Bay takes WR Arrelious Benn, who projects as a solid WR2. They moved up to grab him.

8 (40) Dolphins (From Seahawks through Chargers) OLB Sergio Kindle could go here if the Browns don't snag him.

They take a linebacker, but not Kindle. Koa Misi. He could be a nice IDP sleeper this season.

9 (41) Bills - Buffalo went with stud RB CJ Spiller in Round 1, will they finally nab a QB here?

Torell Troup DT from UCF is a bad pick and a reach at this spot. No fantasy value here either.

10 (42) Patriots (from Chicago through Tampa Bay and Oakland) The Pats have 3 picks this round and are likely to take tight end Rob Gronkowski with one of them.

They trade up a couple to get him, but they do go with Gronkowski. Tom Brady likes his tight ends...

11 (43) Ravens (From Dolphins through Broncos) - They need secondary help. Look for them to take a safety or corner back here.

Sergio Kindle comes with health concerns but he's a very talented kid who will start as a back, which limits any 2010 fantasy value. he's a solid pick here, but doesn't fill a big need.

12 (44) Raiders (From Patriots through Jaguars) - Clausen was in their sites in Round 1, with the Roethlisberger trade seemingly dead, will Al Davis flex here? Otherwise Rodger Saffold or Charles Brown.

Clausen gone, Saffold gone, so what does Al Davis do? He goes to Texas for DT Lamar Houston. This is a solid pick, and a need for the team.

13 (45) Broncos - Sean Lee ILB is the choice

Coach Josh McDaniels surprises again going with Utah OG Zane Beadles

14 (46) Giants - They may grab DT Brian Price or OG Vladimir Ducasse

The G-men go with big man Linval Johnson at DT. Price was off the board, but I like Johnson better anyway.

15 (47) Cardinals (From Patriots through Titans) -  DE Ricky Sapp or OLB Jason Worilds

The Cards trade up to grab OLB Daryl Washington. he's a great addition and could be a solid IDP pick. I think Whisenhunt and Co. could have gotten him at their regular spot, but they got their man.

16 (48) Panthers - The Carolina Panthers have a deep need at QB too, and we think Colt McCoy is their guy. Don't be surprised to see them make it happen.

Patience is a virtue, not only do they get a franchise QB, they had their choice and they get Jimmy Clausen, who gets a real chance to compete and be decent right away

17 (49) 49ers - San Francisco showed their faith in QB Alex Smith in Rd. 1, but I can still see them making a play this round to grab a QB. If not look for them to take a safety.

Good call for the 49ers, as suspected they filled a real need with a top safety in Taylor Mays.

18 (50) Chiefs (From Falcons) - The offensive line needs help. Vladimir Ducasse or Bruce Campbell would be good picks.

The Chiefs grab perhaps the best return man in the draft with Javier Arenas. Could be valuable in leagues which reward return points.

19 (51) Vikings (From Texans) - OG Jon Asamoah or Edwin Veldheer may be their guy.

Toby Gerhart will be the RB to fill Chester Taylor's former spot on the team. This is a solid pick for the purple and yellow, though they had to move up to grab him

20 (52) Steelers - Look for them to grab OT Bruce Campbell or WR Golden Tate

Jason Worilds is not a fantastic pick here for the Steelers. There were greater needs and better options. Plus Worilds has durability issues.

21 (53) Patriots - LB Koa Misi could go here, or a TE if they haven't grabbed one already.

The Pats reached here for a player who isn't that spectacular. I'm a bit surprised at this pick for Belichick. Not much fantasy value for IDP in Jermaine Cunningham

22 (54) Bengals - They should be looking defense here with ILB Brandon Spikes or a DE, maybe Corey Wooten or Alex Carrington

DE Carlos Dunlap is a monster and a steal at this point if he can get his head out of his ass and play up to his potential

23 (55) Cowboys (From Eagles) - If Jerry Jones doesn't trade up to grab one of the more dynamic safeties (Nate Allen, Taylor Mays), I think he may go with DT Al Woods here.

The Cowboys quietly get a solid ILB pick in Sean Lee.

24 (56) Packers - OLB Koa Misi or RB Dexter McCluster

Both guys above were gone, but some people thought Michael Neal would be their pick regardless.  Neal is a poor pick for the Pack when they had much deeper needs.

25 (57) Ravens - DE Linval Joseph or WR Taylor Price

The Ravens grab Alabama defensive tackle Terrence Cody here.

26 (58) Texans (from Arizona through New England) - I suspect they'll go RB here or OG.

The Texans needed help in the run game, and they think they got it with Auburn's RB Ben Tate. Time will tell.

27 (59) Browns (From eagles through Cowboys) - Cleveland trades out of 3rd for this pick

Another chance for the Browns to get their QB of the future and they dropped the ball again. Instead they opted for RB Montario Hardesty. They have James Davis and Jerome Harrison already. What's the point?

28 (60) Seahawks (From Chargers) - I see them going DE here with Carlos Dunlap or Alex Carrington

One thought when the Browns moved up it would be to beat the Seahawks to QB Colt McCoy. Neither team pulled the trigger. The Seahawks fortified their receiving corp with Golden Tate. Great pick.

29 (61) Jets - OG John Jerry or DE Ricky Sapp

Who thought Vladimir Ducasse would still be here for the Jets. Mark Sanchez has got to be happy.

30 (62) Patriots (FromVikings through Texans) - WR is another need.

Brandon Spikes is a solid linebacker and should help the Pats now.

31 (63) Colts - OG Jon Asamoah or Jared Veldheer may be their guy.

Patrick Angerer, ILB - See Brandon Spikes above

32 (64) Saints  - LB Navorro Bowman or RB Montario Hardesty are the likely picks here.

Hardesty was gone, but they have to be thrilled with OT Charles Brown this late. The Saints O-line will be more fierce for his presence

So the biggest thing we've learned after 2 rounds is, for the thousands of mock drafts that are done every year, it's all just a wasted guessing game. And while it sucked to be Aaron Rodgers and Brady Quinn, Colt McCoy has got to be hating life as the third round starts and he's still team-less.

Check back tonight for more draft day updates and stories. Here's a look back at Round One thoughts as the draft progressed.
