2023 Sophmore’s Who Will Breakout This Year

July 19, 2023 by Caleb Turner

In fantasy football, keep an eye on second-year players who have the potential to break out and thrive in the 2023 season. These rising stars could provide excellent value for your team, showcasing their improved skills and delivering impressive performances on the field. As they continue to develop and earn larger roles within their respective teams, these sophomore players have the opportunity to make a significant impact in fantasy football leagues.

Top 5 Sophmore's in 2023

Justyn Ross (KC/WR):

Ross possesses the physical traits and skills to be a promising fantasy football option. As an outside receiver, his quickness, core strength, and ability to beat press coverage are impressive. He excels as a route-runner, showcasing athleticism when changing direction, and offers value in the red zone with his body control and wide catching range. Despite playing with inconsistent quarterbacks, his ability to adjust to off-target throws adds to his fantasy appeal.

Jameson Williams (DET/WR):

Williams had a limited role in his rookie year with the Lions, coming back from an injury and seeing minimal playing time. However, his explosive speed was evident even in limited snaps, forcing defenses to adjust. With a full-time role expected for next season, Williams has the ability to make a significant impact in fantasy football, making him an intriguing player to target in drafts.

Treylon Burks (TEN/WR):

Burks had a challenging rookie season as he was expected to fill the shoes of A.J. Brown after his trade. While it was unlikely for him to seamlessly replace such a talented receiver coming from a different college system, Burks did show glimpses of his big-play ability. Despite averaging a modest 1.75 yards per route run, he showcased impressive yards after the catch (5.4) and a solid contested catch rate (58%). With a better situation and improved health in 2023, Burks has the potential to develop into a player reminiscent of Brown's production, making him an intriguing fantasy football prospect.

Jake Ferguson (DAL/TE):

Ferguson's limited playing time didn't stop him from making an impact as a receiver, catching 20 of 23 targets for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Despite primarily being used as a blocker in the run game, his receiving skills stood out. Looking ahead to the 2023 season, the Cowboys have the opportunity to unleash Ferguson in a more significant role, making him an intriguing fantasy football option with the potential for a breakout campaign.

Breece Hall (NYJ/RB):

Prior to his injury in Week 7, Hall made a strong impression as a rookie, consistently scoring over 13 PPR points in six out of seven games. With the potential of an explosive Jets offense led by new quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Hall has a chance for a sensational sophomore campaign if he remains healthy. Fantasy managers should target Hall in the later part of the second or early third round, but his draft position may fluctuate based on his recovery progress, so monitoring reports is crucial.

The 2023 sophomore class presents a plethora of intriguing breakout candidates who could explode onto the fantasy football scene. From players like Ross with his physical attributes and potential to players like Burks and Hall who showed flashes of their playmaking abilities despite limited opportunities, fantasy managers should keep a close eye on these second-year players. With the right circumstances, increased roles, and continued development, these sophomores have the potential to deliver significant fantasy production and become key contributors to championship-caliber teams.
