The Baltimore Sun is reporting that WR Derrick Mason, TE Todd Heap, NT Kelly Gregg and RB Willis McGahee have been released in a surprise round of slashes shortly after the lockout lift.
And here we go kids; roll up your sleeves and pay attention cause here it comes!
The Ravens are expected to save themselves roughly $18+ million dollars in salary cap, and they could wind-up making a run at free agent Nnamdi Asomugha, but that is left to be seen as of now.
The Baltimore Sun also goes on to say, however, that the Ravens will try and resign both Mason and Heap if at all possible.
The only name in this mix that is of any significance here is running back Willis McGahee, who has been on the decline for years now.
He doesn't even crack our Top 40 running backs rankings, and with good reason!
Todd Heap and Derrick Mason, though, should find new homes elsewhere if the Ravens can't keep them, with both players still holding fantasy football value.
Todd Heap caught 40 balls for 599 yards and five touchdowns which is right on par for a fantasy TE 2.
Derrick Mason caught 61 passes for 802 yards and seven touchdowns...solid for a fantasy WR3.
Heap has a greater chance of returning, but Mason's future isn't so bright since the Ravens already have a bevy of possession receivers much younger than Mason.
Obviously, if Mason does not return, his end-value will be co-dependent on where he winds up.
Keep Heap in your forward focus and consider Mason a late-round flyer for now unless something drastically goes south for him.
From cuts to sleepers, come see why I have projected Earl Bennett to be the Next Big Sleeper!
