Fantasy Football 2011: Are Jeremy Shockey’s Fantasy Days Are Over?

February 22, 2011 by Kurt Turner

Jay Glazer on Twitter has released news that the New Orleans Saints are terminating the contract of TE Jeremy Shockey. And for many, the 2010 fantasy football season exposed Jeremy Shockey’s lack of fantasy football value as his time spent as a blocking TE, and his history of injuries, have finally caught up with him.

Shockey really had only two solid years as a receiving TE (2005: 65 catches for 891 yards and 7 TDs, and 2006: 66 catches for 623 yards and 7 TDs—both with the Giants) but since then, Shockey has averaged 46 receptions for 487 yards and just two scores over three years as a member of the Saints.

This is, however, great news for Saints TE Jimmy Graham who in his rookie year complied 31 catches for 356 yards and 5 TDs.

Jimmy Graham is not necessarily the typical TE. He played three years of basketball at Miami before trying his hand at college football.

But when he put on his hat, Graham showed flashes of a player who could be a significant red zone threat.

In ten games, Graham caught 17 passes for 213 yards and five touchdowns and at 6-6 and 260 pounds—with healthier legs might I add—Graham could wind up being a breakout TE for the New Orleans Saints.

Not to mention he has the type of younger skill sets that the Saints originally wanted to enjoy with Jeremy Shockey.

While it is very early to speculate anything, the fact of the matter is with so many weapons in New Orleans, Graham will be nothing more than a solid TE 2 consideration in your fantasy football draft.

Keep coming back for updates to this post. Afterall, we haven’t even hit the NFL draft yet J
