Detroit’s Calvin Johnson: Sell High?

September 21, 2009 by Kurt Turner

Entering 2009, most so-called fantasy experts looked at Detroit's Calvin Johnson's production last year, his age, his physique, and the fact that he plays indoors and thought Johnson was a sure-fire fantasy monster.

Indeed, in 2009 there were few analysts who doubted Johnson would live up his nickname: Megatron.

And yet here we are after two weeks, with the Lions winless (surprise!), and Johnson has eight catches for 141 yards and one touchdown. Total.

Those are numbers Houston's Andre Johnson put up in Week Two alone, but Calvin is still searching for regularity in the Lions' offense.

He will continue to search as long as rookie Matthew Stafford is under center.

Through two games, Stafford has completed only 50 percent of his passes and has five interceptions with only one touchdown. He's also been sacked three times, and has a quarterback rating of only 40.5 to start his career.

Yes, Stafford was the top overall pick. But as long as the Lions continue his trial-by-fire in an above-average division, it's going to continue to be hard for him to get Johnson the ball.

With Detroit's next four games being against Washington, at Chicago, Pittsburgh and at Green Bay before the bye week, it's not going to get any easier for Stafford to get the ball away to the Lions' best weapon. Also remember the Lions have Baltimore in Week 14, which could be a playoff week for your fantasy league.

If you own Johnson, it might be time to consider putting him on the trade block. This might be a long season for Stafford, and a longer season for owners of Johnson.
