The Steelers running game has been abysmal through three weeks. Both Willie Parker and sophomore Rashard Mendenhall have been dreadful. Going up against the Chargers in the Sunday night game, Pittsburgh was going to be without Parker. They even went so far as to bring preseason stud Isaac Redman up from the practice squad. However, they need not have worried.
Rashard Mendenhall admitted to not knowing exactly where he was going on the field, and what his part was supposed to be. He wanted a second chance, and he got it against San Diego. The result: 165 rushing yards, 2 TDs, 5.7 YPC and 2 receptions for another 26 yards.
Now before everyone rushes to the waiver wire thinking they've found gold in a steel mill, keep in mind, the Charger's entered the game, third worst against the run. Only the Texans and Browns had surrendered more fantasy points to running backs. So when you spend that waiver pick, temper your excitement knowing that Mendenhall has great upside, but a tough road ahead to prove he's the man in Pittsburgh. The next two weeks he faces the Lions and Browns. If he plays like he did tonight against them, then he should be fantasy gold for the next 2 weeks. His real test comes in week seven when he faces the Minnesota Vikings run defense. Did I mention he's only owned in about 36% of Yahoo and ESPN leagues?
That said, he may be this week's top waiver wire grab. Put in your claim now.
