The Chicago Bears agreed with free agent Josh Morgan on a one-year contract Monday, a move that intensifies the upcoming competition for playing time at the third receiver spot.

Morgan, who turns 29 in June, is coming off a disappointing season with the Washington Redskins in which he fell out of favor with the coaching staff. He had 20 catches for 214 yards and no touchdowns.

If the Bears get the 2012 version of Morgan, it could be quite a bargain. He helped the Redskins win the NFC East title that season with 48 catches, 510 yards and two touchdowns. He was a rugged run blocker and consistently demonstrated his toughness by making difficult catches over the middle and breaking tackles.

Last season, however, was sharp turnaround in the wrong direction despite the team's optimism that he would continue to ascend after having the screws removed from the ankle he broke in 2011. Morgan's run blocking was inconsistent, and he did not always play with the same edge and aggression that distinguished him the year before.
