Last year, during his second season in the NFL, linebacker Barrett Ruud started five games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Four of those starts, and a handful of cameos he made in other games, were the result of injuries to Pro Bowl middle linebacker Shelton Quarles. This past spring, after Quarles had departed and Ruud had been anointed as the full-time starter in the middle, the former Nebraska star described the experience of filling in for his erstwhile mentor.
