Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said on a local radio show in Phoenix that John Skelton will be able to compete with Kevin Kolb for the starting quarterback job in 2012. "John certainly deserves it from the way that he played over the back half of the season," Whisenhunt said. Analysis: Skelton helped the Cardinals finish 8-8 as he stepped in numerous times for Kolb when he was dealing with concussion issues. The Cardinals could also be in the market for Colts quarterback Peyton Manning if he's released from the team. Source: CBS Sports
how does it make zero sense? out of all the teams that are desperate for a real QB, no team has more general talent on their roster except for the Jets, but I can't imagine Peyton playing for the fat ass, so AZ actually makes the MOST sense out of all of the possible landing spots.
Their line is absolutely awful, 54 sacks allowed last year, and they aren't so talented as a team that Peyton would push them over the top. They have one all world WR, a bunch of scrubs, a mostly mediocre RB, and no TE. The defense was decent last year but its nowhere near championship caliber and aging fast.
well, wait a minute. in all fairness, a LOT of those sacks and lack of production at WR and TE came from horrible QB play. The QB's they played last year had trouble reading NFL defenses and making decisions (which is why they are so desperate for a real QB). Even if Peyton is only 80%, he will make everyone on that offense a lot better. as far as the age of their defense, their best players are not old. haggans and lenon are the 2 dinosaurs on that defense and they will probably be cut anyway to bring in some younger talent and they can be easily replaced. in fact, i could make a pretty strong case that if they would replace them, they will probably find themselves in a much better position.
I think the only team that makes sense is Arizona. The line means nothing, with the recieving Corps and a chance for the playoffs, if Peyton leaves Indy hes going to Zona. I think Peyton would be wide eyed at the opp. to throw to Fitz daily.
I think the line definitely matters. Mannings not exactly mobile anymore, and he's in no position to be taking anymore hits than he has to. No, the qbs in AZ didnt he the line any last season, but theres no getting around the fact that they are not very good and did not help the qb's any either. Peytons priority should be staying upright, and AZ doesnt offer that.
Yeah but I think a combination of the fact that Peyton is coming will help the line and the Front Office would probably bolster the line if Peyton came in, especially if he told them it was a deal breaker.
Its Manning, the guy that can turn scrub WR's into studs. Im sure playing with the Jets line is a better sell the Fitsgerald
I still don't think you're understanding that a QB's style/skill can make a line look good or bad. Based upon your theory, the Titans and Bills O-lines are twice as good as the Steelers, 49ers, and Jets O-lines since they gave up half the sacks this season. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that BigBen holds onto the ball too long trying to extend the play and Smith and Sanchez have trouble making quick decisions ................
I understand that. That doesnt change the fact that AZ's line is not good. As I said, you are correct in that the qb play didnt help the line look any better, but it goes the other way as well.
As a season ticket holder I'd have to side with Walnuts on this one for a few reasons: 1. My post #post1415486 summed up the Kolb/Skelton situation per the same interview with my opinion on Manning. 2. Russ Grimm is definitely a HOF'er, but not as an O-Line coach. Since arriving in AZ the O-Line has finished dead last or next to last (with the exception of 1 year) in O-Line statistics. He is only on the payroll because of his ties/friendship with Whiz and not because of his O-Line blocking schemes. 3. How bad is the O-Line? Looks as though the Cards will be dumping their starting LT, arguably the most important lineman for a right handed QB. So if they do replace him, replace him with what? A retread? A rookie? Should he stay, the status quo can't be real inviting to Manning either..... IMO. But to Captain's point, John Skelton went 7-2 after Kolb got hurt, but spent the majority of his snaps running for his life. So if Skelton plays, the O-Lines stats would definitely improve. After listening to that interview I'm convinced that Skelton will be given a shot if Manning doesn't come in. The No.1 starter for the Cards in the 2008 training camp was Matt Leinart. Whiz let it be known that it was an open competition and a washed up vet named Kurt Warner won the start and the rest is history. That said, I don't know that Rod Graves is willing to take a hit on Kevin Kolb ($63 million with $21 million guaranteed, DRC and second round pick).
