What QB would you swap a second and a 2011 third round pick or sign?

Close, but Payton offered a second which we declined

Oddly enough, if we made that trade, Whitehurst may have landed in Dallas

He was a third round pick in the draft we would have gotten the 2nd

  2. Ah. I knew I was close. But it goes to show you how much Jones and Bill Parcells valued Romo.

Just like how much Norv Turner and A.J. Smith vauled Whitehurst, even if the deal seems pricey. But they knew his potential, having sat under Philip Rivers for four seasons and looked good in preseason snaps. They were looking to get what they can in return from their investment when they took Whitehurst in the Third Round in the '06 Draft.

I dont read too much into not beating out Voltek. Voltek is an exprienced starter in the NFL, and some teams value that over upside. Particularly if your a winning team like SD.

A perpetual 5 win team wont have an issue throwing an inexpirienced QB into the fire. A team thats alway's in contention will

Right now...today...the kids not worth dropping 20 picks and a third rounder. Maybe they didn't want to hurt Matt Hasselbeck's feelings...

You can say that about all rookies. None of them have played an NFL snap. They're in the same boat, but Whitehurst has had 4 years of NFL coaching and tutelage in a difficult scheme.

I think we gave up too much for him, it should have been one or the other (either dropping in the 2nd or giving up the 2011 3rd), but I'm looking at it optimistically. Pete Carroll was recruiting for USC at that time. Maybe he knows the kid quite well? Maybe he had a communications line with his college coaches? Maybe he played against him and got detailed feedback from his players?

Too many "what ifs" and "maybes" to label this as a good or bad trade as of yet.

Well...since Pete Carroll will soon have 4 starting QB's in the NFL he helped develop during his tenure...I'd wait and see what happens.

I'm not saying there's not a chance for him to succeed. I just think the Seahawks overpaid for him.
