With primary backup Jim Sorgi sidelined indefinitely with a strained right hamstring, former Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter will get a more than ample opportunity to show his skills to the Indianapolis Colts coaching staff over the final week and a half of training camp. In fact, with the Colts scheduled to begin the 2009 preseason with a home game Friday (7:30 p.m.) against the Minnesota Vikings at Lucas Oil Stadium, Painter could very well end up seeing extensive playing time in his National Football League debut. “Obviously, due to the circumstances, he’s going to get a pretty good amount of work, which will be good for him,†Indianapolis head coach Jim Caldwell said Monday, adding that he likes what he’s seen so far from the ex-Boilermaker. “He’s doing well. He’s catching onto the system. Our system is not an easy one to master. It takes a while and it’s fairly complex. We’re just trying to feed it to him a little bit at a time, but he’s a smart guy. He’s studious, and right now I think he’s coming along well.â€
