I prefer it being optional. I use the mobile site 99 percent of the time but for the things it doesn't work with like sending/seeing rep, and polls it's nice to be able to switch to full site.
Yea, mine too, but it defaults to the mobile version so unless you have a browser where you can switch then you were stuck with mobile. Sounds good to me.
I have made it so the mobile skins are optional. You can toggle between the skins by selecting the one you want from the drop down menu at the bottom left of any page on the site.
