I Nominate The Super Bowl XXIV San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl Team.

Super Bowl XXIV was the 24th championship game of the modern National Football League (NFL). The game was played on January 28, 1990 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana following the 1989 regular season.

The National Football Conference (NFC) champion San Francisco 49ers (17-2) defeated the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Denver Broncos (13-6), 5510. It remains the most lopsided game in Super Bowl history to date. The 49ers' 55 points were the most ever scored by one team, and their 45-point margin of victory was the largest ever. The 49ers are the only team in a Super Bowl to score at least two touchdowns in each quarter. Their 2nd of 8 touchdowns ended with a missed extra point however. They are also the only team to score 8 touchdowns in a Super Bowl.

This marked the first time in 10 years that a team won back-to-back Super Bowls, the last time being when the Pittsburgh Steelers won Super Bowls XIII and XIV following the 1978 and 1979 seasons. The Broncos became the second team to lose three Super Bowls in four years after losing Super Bowls XXI and XXII, both by considerable margins as well. The Vikings also lost three Super Bowls in four years (VIII, IX and XI). The Buffalo Bills have also joined this group since.

Joe Montana was named the Super Bowl MVP, his third award in his fourth Super Bowl victory. He completed 22 of 29 passes for a total of 297 yards and a Super Bowl record 5 touchdowns, while also rushing for 15 yards. Montana's 75.9 completion percentage was the second highest in Super Bowl history, and he also set a record by completing 13 consecutive passes during the game. Head coach George Seifert was the second rookie head coach to win a Super Bowl. Montana became the third player in league history to win both the Super Bowl MVP and the AP Most Valuable Player Award during the same season. Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw also won both after the 1966 and 1978 seasons, respectively.

San Franciso 49ers
The 49ers entered the game seeking to win their second straight Super Bowl. However, Bill Walsh retired as head coach after San Francisco's 20-16 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the previous year's Super Bowl XXIII but rookie head coach George Seifert did not miss a beat as he guided the 49ers to a league best 14-2 regular season record. Their 2 losses were only by a combined margin of 5 points.

The 49ers offense was just as dominating as it was during the previous regular season. Quarterback Joe Montana threw for 3,512 yards, 26 touchdowns, and only 8 interceptions, giving him what was then the highest quarterback rating in NFL history (112.4). Montana also rushed for 227 yards and 3 touchdowns, and earned both the NFL Most Valuable Player Award and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award. Wide receiver Jerry Rice had another outstanding season, catching 82 passes for 1,483 yards and 17 touchdowns. Running back Roger Craig was the team's leading rusher with 1,054 yards and 6 touchdowns, and he recorded 49 receptions for 473 yards and another touchdown.

But other stars on the 49ers offense began to emerge, enabling the team to spread the ball around. After being used primarily as a punt returner during his first 2 seasons, wide receiver John Taylor had a breakout season, catching 60 passes for 1,077 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also returning 36 punts for 417 yards. Tight End Brent Jones recorded 40 receptions for 500 yards. Fullback Tom Rathman had the best season of his career, rushing for 305 yards and catching 73 passes for 616 yards. Even Montana's backup, quarterback Steve Young had a great year, throwing for 1,001 yards and 8 touchdowns with only 3 interceptions, while also rushing for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns. With all of these weapons, San Francisco's offense led the league in total yards from scrimmage (6,268) and scoring (442 points).

The 49ers defense ranked third in the NFL in fewest points allowed (253). Defensive ends Charles Haley and Pierce Holt each recorded 10.5 sacks. Their linebacking corps was anchored by Keena Turner, Matt Millen, and Bill Romanowski. Future Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott led the team with 5 interceptions. Defensive backs Eric Wright and Chet Brooks also combined for 5 interceptions between them.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos were trying to avoid becoming the second team, after the Vikings, to lose a fourth Super Bowl. After appearing in Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXII, the team missed the playoffs with an 8-8 record during the previous season. But they signed several new players in the off-season to help them win 10 of their first 12 games and finish with an 11-5 record.

One of Denver's new major additions was rookie running back Bobby Humphrey, who rushed for 1,151 yards, caught 22 passes for 156 yards, and scored 8 touchdowns. Humphrey gave the Broncos a powerful running attack that they lacked in their previous Super Bowl seasons. The defense had a new weapon as well: rookie free safety Steve Atwater. Together with veteran defensive backs Dennis Smith, Wymon Henderson and Tyrone Braxton, the Broncos secondary combined for 14 interceptions. Braxton lead the team with 6, which he returned for 103 yards and a touchdown, while also recovering 2 fumbles. Another new addition was defensive end Ron Holmes, who recorded 9 sacks. Holmes, along with veteran linemen Karl Mecklenburg (7.5 sacks and 4 fumble recoveries) and Simon Fletcher (12 sacks) gave Denver one of the top defensive lines in the AFC.

Veteran receiver Vance Johnson had the best season of his career, catching 76 passes for 1,095 yards and 7 touchdowns, while also returning 12 punts for 118 yards. However, quarterback John Elway played inconsistently during the regular season, throwing just as many interceptions as touchdowns (18) and recording only a 73.7 passer rating.

The 1958 National Football League Championship Game was played on December 28, 1958 at Yankee Stadium in New York City. It was the first ever National Football League (NFL) game to go into sudden death overtime. The final score was Baltimore Colts 23, New York Giants 17. The game has since become widely known as The Greatest Game Ever Played. The game was the 26th annual NFL championship game.

The game marked the beginning of the NFL's popularity surge, and eventual rise to the top of the United States sports market.[1] A major reason was that the game was televised across the nation by NBC, which was a rarity at the time. Colts receiver Raymond Berry recorded 12 receptions for 178 yards and a touchdown. His 12 receptions are a championship record that stands to this day.

After the Giants scored first late in the first quarter with Pat Summerall's 36-yard field goal, a second quarter fumble by New York running back Frank Gifford set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Colts running back Alan Ameche. Gifford fumbled again later in the second quarter, and Baltimore converted that turnover into another touchdown with quarterback Johnny Unitas' 15-yard pass to end Raymond Berry to make the score 14-3 by halftime.

Then early in the third period, the Colts reached the New York 1-yard line. But on third down, Ameche was stopped for no gain, and the Colts turned it over on downs after Ameche was tackled at the 5-yard line on a fourth down halfback option play. The Giants then marched 95-yards, scoring on a 1 yard touchdown run by Mel Triplett to cut the score, 14-10.

The Giants then went ahead early in the fourth quarter with Gifford's 15-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Charlie Conerly. But with about two minutes left in the game, the Colts took over at their own 14-yard line and moved the ball all the way to the Giants 13-yard line to set up a 20-yard tying field goal by kicker Steve Myhra with seven seconds left to send the game into overtimethe first overtime game in NFL History.[1] As Unitas later stated, the players had never heard of overtime before the game, When the game ended in a tie, we were standing on the sidelines waiting to see what came next. All of a sudden, the officials came over and said, Send the captain out. Were going to flip a coin to see who will receive. That was the first we heard of the overtime period.[1]

In overtime, the Giants received the opening kickoff but were forced to punt. On their ensuing drive, the Colts drove 80 yards in 13 plays and scored on Ameche's 1-yard touchdown run to win the game, 23-17.

I'm going to nominate The December 12th, 1965 Gale Sayers 6 Touchdown Performance.

Some little facts on the game and other things he did.

It was a wet, bone-chilling, see-your-breath day in Chicago. Sayers, a rookie halfback for the Bears, tied the NFL mark for most touchdowns in a game by scoring six against the San Francisco 49ers in a classic contest that has been featured many times in fuzzy, black-and-white TV highlights.

Despite the fuzz, fans remember it vividly. So does Sayers. It's difficult to forget a day spent sloshing knee-deep through the mud.

Sayers had a lot of magnificent days; enough to land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame at age 34, the youngest inductee ever. Packing them into a short career makes them even more remarkable. In seven seasons (only 68 games because of two devastating knee injuries), Sayers collected honors more representative of a life's work.

"His days at the top of his game were numbered, but there was a magic about him that still sets him apart from the other great running backs in pro football," Pulitzer Prize-winning sportswriter Red Smith wrote. "He wasn't a bruiser like Jimmy Brown, but he could slice through the middle like a warm knife through butter, and when he took a pitchout and peeled around the corner, he was the most exciting thing in pro football."

The 6-foot, 200-pound Sayers was the 1965 Rookie of the Year after scoring 22 touchdowns, an NFL record that would stand 10 years and still is the rookie mark. He would only play three more full seasons, and in two of them, he would lead the NFL in rushing. Named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first five seasons, he was voted the outstanding back of those games three times.

A severe left knee injury in 1970 effectively ended his career. After playing only two games in 1971, he was finished at 28. In his career, he had gained 6,213 yards running and receiving and scored a total of 56 touchdowns, including eight on kickoff and punt returns. He averaged 5.0 yards a run on his 991 carries (for 4,956 yards). He had set seven NFL records and 23 team marks.

But numbers are simply inadequate to describe Sayers. Better to focus on his elusive moves. His hips gyrated like an exotic dancer's. Sportswriters called him "the football version of the three-card monte" -- now you see him, now you don't -- and "a movable feast."

Bears coach George Halas, who had seen many sensational backs (including the legendary Red Grange, who ran wild 40 years before Sayers), said, "Gale detects daylight. The average back, when he sees a hole, will try to bull his way through. But Gale, if the hole is even partly clogged, instinctively takes off in the right direction. And he does it so swiftly and surely that the defense is usually frozen."

Besides finding holes, Sayers was noted for his "cuts," changing direction and eluding tacklers without losing speed.

Even comedian Bill Cosby weighed in: "He is the man who splits himself in half and leaves the half without the football with the tackler."

Sayers was born on May 30, 1943 in Wichita, Kan. He grew up in Omaha, Neb., the son of a car polisher and mechanic. A star running back at Omaha Central High School, more than 75 colleges offered him scholarships. Sayers said he chose Kansas because he liked coach Jack Mitchell and it was close to home.

Sayers also ran track at Kansas, competing in the high hurdles, 100-yard-dash and even setting a school record for the long jump at 24-10 1/2. But it was on the gridiron that "The Kansas Comet" truly excelled, being a two-time All-American (1963 and 1964). He rushed for 2,675 yards in his Kansas career, including setting the NCAA record for the longest run from scrimmage, 99 yards against Nebraska in 1963.

Sayers was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFL and the Bears in the NFL (fourth overall pick, immediately after Chicago selected another All-American, linebacker twinky Butkus). Despite a more lucrative offer from the Chiefs, Sayers chose the Bears, even though he described their counter-offer as "$4.95 and a carton of Cokes."

In his fifth game, Sayers scored four touchdowns in a 45-37 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. He did even better two months later in the Bears' 61-20 rout of the 49ers, with his six touchdowns equaling the record set by the Chicago Cardinals' Ernie Nevers in 1929 and tied by the Cleveland Browns' Dub Jones in 1951.

His scores came in a variety of ways: 80-yard screen pass, runs of 21, 7, 50 and 1 yards, and an 85-yard punt return. He accounted for 336 yards -- 113 rushing, 89 on receptions and 134 on punt returns.

For his rookie season Sayers accumulated 2,272 yards rushing, receiving and returning kickoffs and punts. In 1966, he ran for a career-high 1,231 yards in the 14-game season, winning the rushing title.

Two years later, though, his world fell apart. Midway through the 1968 season, in the midst of his best campaign to date, the 49ers' Kermit Alexander took out Sayers, who suffered a ruptured cartilage and two torn ligaments in his right knee. He was out for the season.

"The injury was only serious because they had to saw through muscles and nerves," said Sayers. "If they'd had arthroscopic techniques in those days, I'd have been back in a couple of weeks."
Despite the seriousness of the injury, Sayers began the slow process of rehab and physical therapy. He returned to the Bears' lineup in 1969 and ran for 1,032 yards, winning his second rushing title. He also was awarded the George Halas Award as "the most courageous player in professional football."

At the awards presentation, Sayers dedicated his prize to his friend and teammate, Brian Piccolo, who was dying of cancer. The story of his friendship with Piccolo was later immortalized in the 1971 made-for-TV movie "Brian's Song," which starred James Caan as Piccolo and Billy Dee Williams as Sayers. In his 1973 autobiography, "I am Third," Sayers also detailed his friendship with Piccolo.

In an exhibition game in 1970, Sayers suffered a stretched ligament in his left knee. He played two regular-season games with the injury, but couldn't maneuver with the same skill as he had previously and he was operated on. But the knee never felt right again. Despite all his rehab efforts, there would be no more quick cuts and no more successful comebacks. "By 1971, he was playing out the string, his knees possessing all the consistency of Swiss cheese," one sportswriter observed.

In 1973, Sayers was hired as the assistant athletic director at Kansas. Soon after, he became director of the Williams Educational Fund, the fund-raising arm of the KU athletic department.

In 1976, he left Kansas to become the athletic director at Southern Illinois. Then in 1984, he formed Crest Computer Supply Co. in Chicago. The company became a success, posting sales of $55.2 million in 1994.

Sayers remained active in his community working for charities, including the Better Boys Foundation and the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund.

Awards kept coming his way, too. He was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Kansas Hall of Fame, and the Black Athlete's Hall of Fame. But no honor was more appreciated than his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977.

"I had a career that was very short, but it had a lot of thrills," Sayers said. "This tops them all."

I'd like to nominate Wide Receiver, Herman Moore

Herman Joseph Moore (born October 20, 1969 in Danville, Virginia) is a former American NFL wide receiver. He played football in high school, mostly as a kicker as well as playing at tight end. He went to the University of Virginia, where he was a 2-sport athlete he ranks second all-time in career receptions and holds the school record in the high jump. Moore's jersey number was "87."

Moore was drafted in the first round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, where he enjoyed a great deal of success. He was selected to four Pro Bowls, from 1994-1997. He was the second player (after Jerry Rice) to have three 100-catch seasons. Also in 1995, Moore and teammate Brett Perriman (108 catches) became the first WR duo to each catch more than 100 receptions in the same season. In 1998, Herman Moore received the inagural All-Iron Award for his performance in the Thanksgiving game.

Moore finished his 12 NFL seasons with 670 receptions for 9,174 yards and 62 touchdowns.

Jim Marshall (born December 30, 1937 Danville, Kentucky) played college football at Ohio State University. He left school before his senior year, and played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. He was then drafted in the 4th round of the 1960 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Marshall played the 1960 season with the Browns. He played from 1961 to 1979 with the Minnesota Vikings. He started in 270 consecutive games at defensive end, a National Football League record for consecutive starts.

He played in Pro Bowls after the 1968 and 1969 NFL seasons. He recovered 29 fumbles, an NFL record. He was a member of the Vikings' famous "Purple People Eaters", and was the final player from Minnesota's initial expansion team of 1961 to retire.

He was a great Defensive Lineman for the Vikings, played 270 Strait Games and was a part of 4 teams that made it to the Super Bowl. He was a dominant player for most of his career.

I agree with Doug, Marshall needs to make it to the HOF. I can't find any stats but I'll bet they were great for his time of playing.
