Seems like 4 second load times are the norm for me now.

And those times aren't necessarily how long it takes the server to respond, you have to factor in the bandwidth from your physical location.

Well we will have to see how the site performs during the peak time tomorrow and while news is being posted. The news brings the traffic. The more news and the timelier the news is the more visitors we get.

 

If it can handle the load when 500 show up at once that would be awesome.

Put the awards back up and see if it slows down again?
