I think you are looking at the past with rose colored glasses. Nobody talked trash in the past? How about "Hollywood" Henderson saying Terry Bradshaw was so stupid he couldn't spell cat if you spotted him the "c" and the "a". You want to go back and find some trash talking? Look back and see all that was said between the Raiders and Steelers in the 70's. If anything now we don't see enough good trash talking like we used to since everyone is so PC conscious and afraid to be criticized for their opinions.

Hey, you watch football for your reasons, other will watch it for theirs. Still, in the end everyone has a voice and a place to find what stirs their passion for the NFL here on GIF.

Trash talking has been going on forever. It's obviously more prominent now because of all the media outlets...but it's always been a part of the game. To think it hasn't, is just silly...

Capt'n has a point. It isn't new but it is alot more prevalent. His example of celebrating 3yds on 1st and 10 is a good example of some of the bullcrap in today's NFL

Don't even TRY to compare the players from 30+ years ago to the players of today ............. sure, there were a 'few' idiot trash talkers and the Raiders were obviously one of the pioneers of the 'modern' trash talking but the game WAS played with a LOT more respect and dignity 30 years ago..............

guys didn't used to have to bob their heads while strutting down the field for 30 seconds after making a 7-yard catch when their team was behind by 30 points with 2 minutes left in the game .............. you RARELY see someone in the league score a TD and just hand the ball to the ref anymore ........... it happened ALL the time 30 years ago .............. so, nice try, but i'm not buying what you're selling here.

    um, ironic anyone?

i'm not buying what you're trying to sell here either. the actual NFL forums on GIF are very restrictive as far as what someone wants to say ............ maybe you're more in agreement with the league's concerns than you think you are.

all the league wants is a little more respect and dignity towards the game ............ i'm sure you would say the same about your nfl forums .................

I agree with this, I've seen enough of this bullcrap in the NFL. The team is behind by 13 points and they get a few yards (finally) and the player is celebrating and pointing to the end zone like they are ahead by 10 points, ridiculous...

Trash talking and "show boating" are two different things in my book. What you are describing, to me, is show boating and yes, you'd be correct. There was a lot less show boating...however, the trash talk...it's always been there.

i'm 99% certain Don Hutson never called Sammy Baugh an 'butthole' before a playoff game............. i can't be 100% certain because i wasn't alive then, but i'm pretty certain the idiotic behavior exhibited by today's players has not ALWAYS been there ........... the trash talking, the show boating, the back-talking to coaches .......... this IS a modern problem ......... it may have started slowly creeping into the league in the 70's and 80's, but it IS now to epidemic proportions and it IS a turn-off to many true football fans who don't watch professional wrestling ...........

    You're right...

    But Bednarik wasn't a trash talker...no...

Probably wasn't any kind of trash talking going on when Cliff Harris was slammed to the ground by Jack Lambert in Super Bowl X? Nah...

Then there's Joe Namath guaranteeing a win.

Hollywood Henderson's comments about Terry Bradshaw.

Trash talking has never been a part of the game...you're right...

It's definitely at the forefront and more a part of the game now...but you can't say it's never been a part of the game until recently...

Old time players from the 50s & 60s talk a lot about how dirty the game was with finger poking players in the eyes during pile-ups and whatnot.

The explosion of media in the NFL has made it seem like it is worse now than then. Players didn't have constant media attention back in the day.

    Showboating is a different story.

  12. Trashing-talking has always and will always exist in the NFL.

It's apart of the game and in sports in general. It makes it more entertaining. As long as it doesn't go too far......I'm fine with it.

Really? No trash talking? C'mon man, your memory is just getting short. Maybe none by Sweetness, but he was mister clbutt. Football is about violence and emotion as much as competition and strategy; like it or not.

Unsportsmanlike conduct outside of blatant attempts to injure should be completely abolished and the players and coaches should be free to say what they want. If they think it is strategically advantageous to get under the opponents skin and want to risk the bulletin board material, then fine.

Apples & oranges. Just can't be grouped together...

But the trash talking alone? Been in the league from the beginning. Anyone who doubts it should read some of the books by older players to see that simple fact. Dawk is right that the real culprit is the media approach to hyping a game. Whereas in the past comments were covered locally & dropped relatively quickly to become locker room bulletin board material, Today it becomes a circus of media outlets, country & world wide, crowding in for the next soundbite.

Following the media line of questioning should answer that question also. They go for the sensational & the 'dirt' as a rule & egg players/coaches to spout off. & to think there wasn't loud mouths in the past just chomping at the bit for someone to listen is just ludicrous.

The NFL is just getting bit by the very tool they use to promote their game...the media.

...which the line of questioning is never included in the story...which people tend to forget, there is someone there asking the questions...lol.

    Agree Tarkus...

A couple random snippets from my aging memory:

"I'm quite sure our linebackers are going to get to McMahon & take him out. They won't go for his arm, they'll go for his head".

NE CB Ronnie Lippert before SB XX with the Bears

During his time with the Chiefs, Fred Williamson became one of football’s first self-promoters, coining the nickname “The Hammerâ€￾ — because he used his forearm to deliver karate-style blows to the heads of opposing receivers. Prior to Super Bowl I, he garnered national headlines by boasting that he would knock Green Bay Packers starting receivers Carroll Dale and Boyd Dowler out of the game, stating “Two hammers to (Boyd) Dowler, one to (Carroll) Dale should be enough. His prediction turned out to be ironic, because Williamson himself was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter, his head meeting the knee of Packer running back Donny Anderson.

it's amazing how wrong you can be about something and yet look down on others that disagree with your stellar opinions.

    it's entertaining though.

“Shannon looks like a horse. I’ll tell you, that’s an ugly dude. You can’t tell me he doesn’t look like Mr. Ed†– Atlanta Falcons CB Ray Buchanan talking about Denver Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe.

“Tell Ray to put the eyeline, the lipstick and the high heels away. I’m not saying he’s a cross dresser, but that’s just what I heard.†– Sharpe’s response to Buchanan.

and the 85 bears were full of trash talkers, payton wasn't one of them but that team as a whole especially a certain DC was all to happy to take shots at the opponent.
