    May 24, 1967

    The AFL awarded a franchise in 1968 to Cincinnati. A group with Paul Brown as part owner, general manager, and head coach, was awarded the Cincinnati franchise. The Bengals were later absolved into the NFL and Paul's son Mike now owns the team.

    Iconic professional football pioneer George Halas retired for the fourth and last time as head coach of the Chicago Bears. Halas had been a player-coach of the team on and off since the 1920s.

    AND...Free Agency began. I think.

    Thirteen-year veteran wide receiver Frank Lewis officially retired. Lewis won two Super Bowls with the Steelers before finishing his career with the Bills.

    The NFL and the NFL Players Association signed a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The 7-year deal was the most extensive benefits plan in pro sports, guaranteeing more than $1 billion in pension, health, and post-career benefits.
