Packers Unlikely To Use Franchise Tag On QB Matt Flynn

Even after locking up tight end Jermichael Finley on a two-year contract extension, the Green Bay Packers are unlikely to use the franchise tag on quarterback Matt Flynn, Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee reports. Franchising Flynn in an attempt to trade him to a quarterback-needy team would require the Packers to carry the nearly $14.5 million in guaranteed base salary on their salary cap. The Packers currently do not have the cap space in order to do so, though room could be created by releasing or restructuring the contracts of veterans Chad Clifton and Donald Driver. The Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks could have interest in Flynn if he were to hit the free agent market.

Oh so they are just gonna let him walk instead of geting a very nice draft pick or two for him.

    Uh huh.

I would not waste the franchise tag on a back up QB thats had ONLY TWO great starts.

i agree. why wouldn't they tag and trade?

maybe the market for flynn is not as strong as we thought and teams aren't going to give draft picks for the guy.

Why would teams trade? They wait the Packers cut him anyway, because they can withdraw the tag.

you would trade for him to secure his rights above any other team before he hits the open market and his price goes way up.

A high draft pick is a high price regardless.

They would easily be able to get a 2nd for him. If they wanted to drag it out, they could get a first, but that would be way to much of a gamble. Just do what the Patriots did with Cassell

If your asking price is an early second round pick, teams needing a QB will be on that all day, and you just picked up a very high pick for a guy that is now going to walk other wise and you get nothing

    Not with the new CBA...

For anyone complaining that a high draft pick is too much for someone who "hasn't proven himself in the NFL", he's done more to prove himself at this level than anyone you would be drafting with that pick. Its a gamble, sure, but its less of a gamble than some college kid who you have zero evidence will be a good NFL player.

My biggest thing is there is a bigger need that the Packers have to deal with in terms of working out a deal or tagging the player than a back up QB.

Not only that...he's done more to prove himself than Rob Johnson did. He's just as much as Matt Schaub has.

Right. We can use this tag either on Flynn or Wells. Letting Wells hit the FA market and hoping some other team wil give us a 1st or second round draft pick didn't work out IMO.
