Just saw on Yahoo Sports where Manziel's agent has tweeted that Manziel will not throw at the combine.
I don't see how a DE/OLB is a bigger need that corner for the Saints in the first round. I would like to see how Butler plays when he comes back. When Greer and Lewis went down last year it really exposed our secondary. I would go with a corner in the first and possibly third rounds. Just my thoughts. But good work. I wouldn't have the patience to do one. And I don't know a tenth of any of these guys.
This is supposed to be the day that teams that are interested in Manziel get to talk to him. Has ESPN started their coverage yet? I heard this morning that Manziel is 5-11 and 3/4 and weighs 207.
I don't understand why any high profile QB would want to throw at the Combine. No pads, gym shorts, tennis shoes and predetermined routes. Any slip up in accuracy could do nothing but hurt the prospect. Plenty of film in game situations to demonstrate what he can do.....IMHO. That said, other Combine throwing QB's from yesteryear like Jacory Harris from Miami, Austin Davis of Southern Miss and Chandler Harnish of Northern Illinois pretty much had to throw in last year's Combine because they were no-names. Davis (Rams) and Harnish (Colts) made teams and only Harris did not make an NFL squad. Probably helped them more than it hurt their chances.
I have been listening to some (about 7) of the GM pressers and in relation to this topic have taken away a few key pointers. 1. Every GM expressed the view that "you're here to compete, any time a guy gets a chance to compete,he should take it" 2. Every GM said they don't expect a QB to complete throws to Receivers he only just met,so it's not about completions. The thing the teams gain is some unique film.As Viking GM Rick Spielman put it "the folks here at the combine do a great job with all the different camera angles they get,and it allows the coaches to look at a guy and decide if his flaws are coachable,if we can correct things" Obviously I've never seen the film, but apparently they get close ups from all different angles, like how a QB grips the ball, and all that kind of stuff. 3. Every GM said they wouldn't downgrade a guy from what they saw at the combine, however they may upgrade him.
There's a note in Rick Gosselin's column in today's Dallas Morning News that Manziel is going to throw on the campus of TAMU for those NFL teams that want to check out his arm strength on March 27th.
For anyone who is interested in such things, Manziel has large hands. Bigger than Bortles. Bigger than Brady.
