After taking three backs in eight drafts, general manager Ted Thompson took two last weekend.

One reason for the Alabama running back Eddy Lacy's draft-day plunge went public Sunday, Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Lacy was taken off the Steelers' draft board because of toe fusion surgery last off-season, he fell, and fell, and the Packers took him anyway.

Lacy, at full strength, is the runaway head of the draft clbutt. On the best team in college football, in the best conference, he rushed for 1,322 yards with 18 touchdowns, this, after the surgery.

"He was always healthy enough to practice," said Alabama's tight end Michael Williams, drafted by the Detroit Lions. "He practiced every day; he never missed a day of practice. He had the foot injury, or whatever it was, and played through that. You couldn't tell he was hurt.

"He did everything. He never had to sit out. He's a product of Alabama, I'll just say that."

"From Day 1," Lacy said. "I'm going to be ready to go.
